Brook Baptist Church

Brook Baptist Church Our pastor is David Howard. We are a Southern Baptist Church and aligned with the SBCV (Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia).

We are a congregation of people who are joyfully serving the kingdom of God. Our service is joyful because of the great Savior Jesus is. We are servants because we seek to minister the love of Jesus to one another, to our community, and to the poor.

I am so sorry to have to make this post. My dearest, David, who has been battling medical problems the entire 41 years we have been married, in his recent weakness had a fall and hit his head, and went home to be with the Lord in the arms of Jesus. Some of you know that he had recently gone on dialysis, and we feel that this has spared him and us some of the grief at the end of that process. But of course, we are heartbroken.

I am so thankful for our family, church family, and friends, who have been so helpful during this time and such a huge comfort to us. God has done so many things to show us his love through you and through the different events happening previous to this. We give all the glory and praise to God for David’s faithful witness throughout his life, and how God used him to strengthen each one of us. He especially used David to change me. We miss him terribly, but we look forward to seeing him again!

To quote my son, Nathanael:
He didn't lose! He completed the work God laid out for him and yesterday He welcomed him home into His loving arms, saying, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Amen and amen. Thank you, Lord Jesus.

John Newton wrote these words in his great hymn, Amazing Grace; "Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come: tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home." Above all else this Thanksgiving, we can be thankful for God's amazing grace that saved wretches like us through the shed blood of His Son, Jesus. Then we can be thankful that God has brought us safely through many dangers, toils, and snares. When I think over this past year, I know this is what God has done for me, for my family, and for our church. That is why, to quote Stuart Townend and Keith Getty, "My heart is filled with thankfulness . . ."
But along with thankfulness that God has "brought me safe thus far," there is hope in Newton's words in the verse I quoted from Amazing Grace. The verse ends with the simple words, "and grace will lead me home." If you are a believer, as you give thanks this year for your salvation and for God's safe protection through the many "dangers, toils, and snare," remember, He will lead you home. Nothing in this coming year, no matter how difficult, can "sn**ch" us out of His hand. He said, "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will sn**ch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). We are secure in Jesus, no matter what. And so, we can have confidence, not in ourselves, but in His amazing grace. I pray each one of you will have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving!

With great sadness we mourn the loss of TGC co-founder Timothy Keller, 72, who died today, more than three years after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“Today the Christian world is in mourning, for one of our great leaders has departed this life,” TGC interim president Sandy Willson said. “He will be remembered among this generation’s most effective Christian pastors, apologists, and evangelists. Tim not only made the most articulate arguments for the Christian faith; he also demonstrated our faith with his humble and gracious spirit and his relentless passion to see the lost come to know the Lord he so loved.”

We were so happy as a church to to join in on the Walk for Life to raise funds for the Tidewater Crisis Pregnancy Center. https://cpcfriends.org/
We participated in the walk at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk on April 29. We were thankful the Lord blessed us with good weather, and we were happy to be able to support this organization together. We had the added blessing of enjoying God‘s creation after the walk!

My heart is broken for Ukraine. What is happening there is so terrible. It's hard to imagine the fear and hardship and suffering the people must be experiencing. In the past day there have been many calls to prayer. I would like to join.

Let's pray that God would restrain Putin. Also, let's pray;

For the safety of the many people of Ukraine.
For the children especially.
That there will be food and water available.
That many people would escape the country.
That the nations of the world would do all they can to pressure Russia and to open their arms to refugees.
That the church in Ukraine would remain faithful and courageous as pressure grows against them.
That even in the midst of terrible suffering, people would come to trust in Jesus.

These are just some requests, there are many others. I hope we can not get so caught up in our own daily lives that we don't take time to pray earnestly for the Ukrainian people.

May God's grace and mercy be poured out on Ukraine so that their suffering comes to a quick end!

We sing “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” on Easter Sunday morning. It is one of the great, joyful hymns of God’s people. We celebrate because Jesus is alive. He rose from the dead and ascended to His Father in heaven. He has been exalted as King over all things. What does that mean to us who believe in Him?

He is our King who rules over all things for His people. That means we do not need to fear our circumstances. He reigns. He is in control. He is working for the good of His people. (Ephesians 1:19-20)

All the promises of God are “Yes” in Him. Every promise of God in Scripture that applies to us is and will be fulfilled in Jesus because He paid the penalty for our sin and rose from the dead. We can count on Him. (2 Corinthians 1:20)

He lives to make intercession for us, that is, He is pleading our cause based on His sacrificial death at His Father’s throne in heaven. He intercedes for us. Satan’s accusations against us are met at the throne of God with Jesus declaring to His Father that He has paid the price for our sin. (Hebrews 7:23-25)

He is always with us. Jesus said, before He ascended to His Father in heaven, “I am with you always to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:10). In the midst of all our hardships and trials, as we seek to serve Him and point others to Jesus, He is with us, to strengthen, to guide, and to protect.

We will live forever with Him. This is our great hope. It is not an uncertain hope like, “I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow.” It is certain. 1 Peter 1:3-4 says, “he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you . . .”

I pray you have a blessed Easter as you rest in the benefits of Christ’s Resurrection.
