Discipline was an unpleasant part of childhood, and it’s an even more unpleasant reality of adulthood - except many times we call it natural consequences.

When we are young, we only see discipline as a source of punishment or getting back at us for something we’ve done. Some of us may have grown up in a home where discipline was used as a negative way to take out a parent’s frustration or to simply punish us for “being bad”.

Whatever your experience may be with discipline, your initial instinct is likely to cringe when you hear discipline as a positive thing. How can a good and loving God want to hurt His children? That’s just not the case though. God doesn’t want to hurt us. He wants us to live a life of righteousness guided by Him, but sometimes we stray off that path and do what WE see as best instead of what HE knows is best; then, natural consequences happen, and we blame God for why those bad things happen.

I’m not saying that if something bad happens to you, that always means you’ve done something wrong. On the contrary, I am saying that our poor choices can oftentimes lead to consequences like broken relationships, jail, or even death. Sometimes our choices can have a bigger negative impact than we could have ever imagined. The consequences, while unpleasant, are sometimes what we need to get back in the right path. Discipline is needed to train us. It takes a different type of discipline to train and build good habits. At the end of the day, whether it’s discipline of natural consequences or self-discipline, we need discipline to grow and ultimately bring peace and sanity back to our lives. That’s not always the case, but oftentimes our problems can be diffused by rebuilding those rhythms and routines back into our lives to help us get things back in order.

So whether you get back in the gym every day or discipline yourself to read your Bible for even 5 minutes a day, discipline yourself now, so you can avoid the natural consequences later. You’ve got this. 💪

• John 11:35 •
Oftentimes, I think we tend to overlook this verse and just use it as a reminder that Jesus cried too. Yes, Jesus shared the tough emotions too, not just happy ones. However, we have to provide full context to really soak in the beauty of this verse. Mary, the woman who poured perfume on Jesus’s feet and washed them, her brother Lazarus was extremely sick. In the Bible, when they informed Jesus of this, they referred to Lazarus as “the one you love”, which emphasizes the importance of this relationship to Jesus. Regardless of His love for His friend, Jesus stayed where He was for a couple more days. I mean, come on Jesus, your best friend is about to die. Lazarus ends up dying, but Jesus describes it as sleep because He knows he’s going to raise him from the dead (spoiler alert). Martha was reasonably upset that Jesus took so long because now her brother was dead. He promised that their brother would rise again. Now, Jesus sees Mary weeping, and He was extremely upset to see them so troubled. What then? Jesus wept. That’s right, the ugly kind of cry where tears stain your cheeks and the kind where I can only imagine the whaling that drew from His lips. Wait a minute…if Jesus knew He was going to rise from the dead, why stop to cry? Why not rise Him from the dead immediately? Why let this happen to the “one he loved”? Now, I can’t tell you for sure what was running through the mind of the Som of God, but I can tell you this. Jesus knew the best way to support these grieving sisters was to grieve with them. Even if He immediately healed Lazarus, imagine the heaviness they would still feel on their hearts trying to process that their brother died but was somehow now alive. That would be extremely jarring. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for someone who is grieving is to grieve with them. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is slow down and just be present for those who are mourning. Sometimes, you have to ugly cry, so others know it’s okay to cry. People pass away because it’s a harsh reality of this fallen world, but if we follow Jesus, we can have hope to “awake again” and spend eternity in Heaven with a God who weeps because He loves us. 💕

God spoke to me through the verse of the day yesterday. Last night, I received news that my uncle’s cancer was now at the point where he doesn’t have a lot of time left. He has lung and esophageal cancer, and it has metastasized/invaded his entire body at this point. He hasn’t eaten in about a week and a half, and he went to Houston with my aunt in hopes of fighting this more. At this point, they aren’t sure he’ll be able to make it home. The doctors say weeks at this point, but it may be days from what everyone is saying. As my brain went completely numb, I noticed this verse on my phone. I think I can speak for everyone in my family when I say, this is not what we had planned. We never planned to have my uncle suffer in pain like he is. We never planned to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. We never planned any of this, but my aunt said something that I know came from God and she never saw this verse: God has a plan for him. Whilst she is there watching him suffer, she said God has a plan for him. Now that, that’s hard. My aunt had to tell my uncle that her and my cousins would be okay. The level of strength they are having through this is incredible to me. Even though everyone is so shell-shocked and numb at what’s to come, God has a plan. Whatever you’re going through today, God has a plan, and remember that you don’t always have to be strong. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to mourn. It’s okay to sob until you fall asleep. You’re not alone. As often as you think of this story today, pray for my family. Pray for God to relieve my uncle of his pain. Pray for peace for my family. Pray for wisdom for the doctors. Pray that we all see God’s purpose in this the entire time, even if it’s not a part of our plans. 💕
