The Holy Spirit and Pentecost – Part 1 | Liz Dowdy | Evangel Church

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon believers, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and power. They began to speak in tongues. But let’s go back 50 days to what happened on that Easter Sunday when Jesus was resurrected. Jesus made it clear that His death and resurrection were directly connected to our salvation and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus also said He was sending the Promise of the Father and believers would be endued, or clothed, with power. So, He was not talking about the Holy Spirit coming to dwell within believers at the point of salvation. He was referring to what happens after salvation. Believers can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with His gifts which bring power and a new life-changing dimension. We can be empowered to communicate the message of Jesus to those around us just as those on the day of Pentecost.

Feast of Pentecost | Liz Dowdy | Evangel Church

To understand what Pentecost means for the Church, we must look at the original Feasts as they relate to: Jews in the Old Testament, believers in the New Testament, and us today. Pentecost the middle of seven feasts and because of Jesus Christ, it served as a dividing line in the life of the Jews and for us in the New Testament Church.

Today we will examine the then and now of Pentecost, the origin of Pentecost, and instructions for Pentecost. The joy and blessing that Pentecost brings have continued to spread through the centuries. Today the same salvation that Peter spoke of and the same gift of the Holy Spirit are as available to you as they were to those present in Acts 2 on the Day of Pentecost.

Welcoming the Spirit of Pentecost | Tim Wright | Evangel Church

To gain a better understanding we will examine New Testament phrases for the receiving of the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts. Do you desire an encounter with the Holy Spirit, not merely the recognition of an annual event on the Christian calendar called Pentecost, but a rekindled passion for God.

To gain a sense of the ways in which the Spirit fills us, we can study several of the verbs used in the book of Acts, which describe our being filled to overflowing by the Holy Spirit. God didn’t choose these different words simply to provide a variety of expressions. Rather, they reveal to us the full range of experiences in the Holy Spirit.

We are a Pentecostal church. We must keep full of the Spirit so that we may demonstrate His love and power to that world each one of us touches. Keep the experience and passion alive.

The Coming Change in the Last Days | Liz Dowdy | Evangel Church
In Chapter 3 of 2 Timothy, Paul as a prophet speaks of what will happen in these last days. He warns that humanity will continue in destructive self-seeking motivations and decline morally and spiritually. He also gives hope to those who trust God and know His Word.

When Faith Isn’t Just About You | Tim Wright | Evangel Church

Faith was never meant to be lived alone. In Mark 2, we discover that sometimes the boldest belief isn’t found in the person who is healed, but in the friends who refuse to leave the one where they are and carry them to Jesus.

There are moments in life when faith feels strong. There are moments when faith feels heavy. Heavy because of grief or exhaustion. Heavy because you’ve prayed the same prayer for longer than you ever expected. The truth is sometimes your faith is not enough to carry you. That doesn’t make you weak, that makes you human.

We have talked about a progression of faith from needing Jesus, trusting Jesus’ authority, trusting when things feel like they are falling apart. But today, the focus shifts one more step outward. Because eventually faith stops being only about what God will do for you and starts becoming about what God might do through you.

Mark 2; Galatians 6:2-3; James 2:17; Galatians 6:9-10
