Psalm 58
Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge people fairly? No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.

Often our biggest idol is ourselves. We turn ourselves into a god. When we need something, we rely only on ourselves, never turning to God. When we feel uncertain, we only look within. We confirm our own decisions by only checking our own hearts. We even twist God’s word into our own words, trying to use the Bible to justify our own judgement. This path seems good to us, until we reach the end of our rope. When the chaos of life surpasses our ability, we can go two directions. We can seek to blame others, blame God, blame anyone. Or we can ask for help. If we can turn to God in our trials, then those moments can become a blessing, because they point us to God.

Make us humble, Lord. Our sinful hearts so often seek to elevate ourselves above our neighbors and even you. Help us to follow you, the True God instead of setting ourselves up as idols. Amen.

Psalm 57
My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul!

The Christian music tradition is remarkable. From the Gregorian chants of the 10th century to the spirituals written by enslaved laborers of the American South, to the contemporary Christian music of today, the musical tradition of our faith is varied and beautiful. Across the history of Christianity, there has been an instinct, a desire to make our hope and joy known through song. The poetry of the Psalms is another example of this instinct, true among the followers of God well before the coming of Christ.

The style of our music is not of greatest importance. Many of us have a preference for particular songs or musical styles, but God listens to the heart that makes the music. When your heart sings a song of thanksgiving, no matter what your lips are doing, the Lord listens with joy to your heart’s song.

Lord God, Thank you, thank you, thank you. Our lives are filled with gifts beyond measure. You fill our lives with goodness and purpose. Your love is above all else to me, greater in value than any other gift I could receive. Amen.

Psalm 56
O Most High, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I am not afraid; what can flesh do to me?

As I watch the news, I see again and again people arguing for all the reasons that we should be afraid. And some of these causes of fear are legitimate dangers to ourselves or people we love. However, fear is not the only response available to us. Another choice is faith. In times of trial, we can turn to God in faith and ask God for help. If we trust in the Eternal Almighty, why would we be afraid of what temporary flesh can do? When we are afraid, scripture points us to God, “The Most Hight”. It reminds us that God is over all things, including over the particular issues that are scaring us. If we trust God and if we believe that God is over the causes of our fear, then we can hand our fear over to God, the one whom we love and trust.

Lord, the world moves too fast for me. So much of what happens is beyond my control and above my paygrade. But nothing is beyond you. So, I turn to you, the God I love and trust. I turn to you and ask you for help with my fear. Amen.

Psalm 55
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me… But I call upon God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he will hear my voice.

Our Psalms carry a visceral understanding of pain, both physical pain and pain of the heart. In Psalm 55, the writer feels betrayed by someone he loved and now fears for his life. In his time of distress, he turns to God in prayer. Insistent, repetitive, heart-rending prayer. The psalmist bares the deepest pain of his soul and begs for deliverance.

Sometimes I think we need to be reminded that we can and should bring our deepest anguish to God. Not merely polite requests or quiet thanks, in times of distress our prayers should give substance to the moans of our hearts. The apostle Paul reminds us that when we do not have the words to pray, the Spirit intercedes through “Wordless Groans”. No matter what our distress, we can lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus.

Lord Almighty, sometimes we walk through life happy and unaware, but other times the suffering of life seems to surround us and overwhelm us. In these times of heartbreak and pain, we ask you to be with us to save us. Deliver us from our agony, Lord and set us in the land where there are no more tears. Amen.
