Successful leaders never stop learning, according to Tom Wood. Whether they read books, learn new skills, study academic or business journals, learn from their employees or peers, or strive for change through innovation, they all share a passion for wanting to learn new skills and ideas.

The most effective teams have regular, intense debates. The ability to disagree without causing offense is a crucial precondition for good communication and problem-solving, according to Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton. Great leaders don’t encourage their team members to come to agreements quickly; as a matter of fact, they help their teams disagree–productively.

No one will ever have all the correct answers, and ultimately, you will make better decisions as a leader by having diverse people and views on your team. When teammates have an opportunity to challenge each other, as long as the discussions are respectful and everyone gets a chance to contribute equally, most people thrive on this kind of debate, finding it intellectually stimulating and helpful for unearthing the best solutions.

Building a team with conflicting world views or differing opinions of your industry will push you to think critically – even more so than you may have in the past. If you want to build a great company, permit your team to disagree with you and listen to their feedback because it’s not about you; it’s all about providing the best service and products that make a difference in the lives of the people you are entrusted to serve.

Exceptional leaders are the ones who stand up for their people and support them when they are experiencing their most challenging moments. They also encourage and push their people to take on more significant challenges.

Exceptional leaders treat you as you deserve to be treated: With dignity and respect. They don't strike you down with belittling comments and never intentionally try to place you in an embarrassing or demeaning position in front of your colleagues or clients. Instead, they show a genuine interest in and concern for others. They ask, "How are you?" or "How's your family?" And then they listen and express genuine concern.

Exceptional leaders always find time to express appreciation for their team's work and have this unique ability to inspire and motivate people to believe in something beyond their own limiting thinking.

A “team” is not just people who work at the same time in the same place. A real team is a group of very different individuals who enjoy working together and are committed to working cohesively to help their organization achieve its common goals and fulfill its purpose.

Most likely, they are not all equal in experience, talent, or education, but they are similar in one vitally important way, their commitment to the good of the organization. A leader’s role is greatly diminished without their team, and any group of people, your family, your workplace, or your community, will get the best results by working as a team.

Leaders who understand that leading others is a privilege also know that no one is an expert in everything. Instead, the most influential businesses are built by a team committed to helping the organization achieve its vision and purpose.

According to Brian Scudamore, I've learned that strong leaders don't fight to have the first and last word. Instead, they listen to their teams, ask the right questions, and allow everyone to contribute. Why do so many leaders seem to forget that leading others more than anything else should be held in reverence? You are privileged to be in a position where you can direct, shape, and focus the potential of people toward a specific result.

Remember, leadership is all about people, inspiring people to believe that the impossible is possible, developing and building people to perform at heights they never imagine. It's all about inspiring your team to become the very best version of themselves. When you understand that, your company will become one of the best in the world.
