Wise words from our partner church in Siberia!
Why don't many Christians attend church services? Everyone has their own answer, of course, but the bottom line is that we are losing the ability to recognize ourselves as sinners. We begin to think we can live our lives as we do, and then, as a reward for being seemingly good people, receive salvation.
Please forgive me. I don't mean to generalize. And I certainly don't want to offend anyone. Everyone has their own reasons. But one day, when you skip the liturgy, ask yourself: what is more important to me this time than the Word of God and the Eucharist? More important than the forgiveness of sins, more important than the Kingdom of God, more important than eternal life?
Perhaps we simply don't see the connection between salvation and Christ. And Christ is here, where His altar is. And He invites us, but we constantly refuse: not now, next time, Lord.
Hear this and be horrified, please: if we can respond to Christ like this, it means we place our trust not in Him. But in ourselves. But can we save ourselves?
Next week, Great Lent begins. It always begins on time. Precisely when we need it. Whenever sin overcomes us, we need fasting. So that we remember that we are sinners. That we all need Christ. We need His forgiveness, His word, His Eucharist. Without them, we will perish. Set your priorities in life and come to church services. Reexamine your relationship with yourself—and with the Church.
Next week, Great Lent begins. And Christ will be waiting for you in church—during this time of fasting, and always.
