Just last week we celebrated the beginning of spring and despite the cold snaps thrown our way, most of us here in Alabama saw the bright yellow pollen dusting all of our surroundings and we knew the flowers were blooming. Yesterday morning as I took my dog on his morning walk I noticed my neighbors flowers blooming full of color around their mailboxes. All of them I thought looked brighter and prettier than they were before they went into hibernation in the late fall. They rose up again to show us their beauty, another reminder spring is here and God’s creation blooms in full. Each year, these perennials will come back. They bloom as bright, if not brighter, as they were before no matter if we see a milder winter or a harsh freezing one. (We all remember those negative wind chills of Christmas 2022!)
This week marks Holy Week, a week we as Christians celebrate remembering Jesus’s walk to the cross, from being celebrated with cries of Hossana, his path laid with palm branches as he rode into Jerusalem, his Last Supper with his disciples, humbling himself as servant as he washed their feet, to the cross where cries of Hossana were replaced with violent cries to crucify him. We end a week where Friday is dark and Saturday is full of grief only to awaken on Sunday to find our Savior has risen! He not only hung on the cross to take in our sins, but he rose again to give us new life. The flowers I see on my morning walk remind me of the empty tomb and the new life we have been given. They remind me that no matter the season we’re in, no matter the cold or the dark or bright and warm, our Savior is with us, always working to encourage us to bloom.
He rose from the grave so that we too may rise and overcome the death that threatens to over take us in the harsh seasons of life. These flowers don’t need to be replanted or redone, they just need our love and care, water and sunshine. My friends, I want to remind each and every one of you that Christ planted himself in you in his resurrection and if the season you’re in feels dark and cold, you too can be resurrected. As we move into this Holy Week, my hope is each person remembers they’re just like these perennial flowers I see each year, watered with God’s grace with His grace shining down upon you, beautiful just as you were made.
Peace and love to all,
Pastor Kaite
