This morning at Church of the Common Table I did a dramatic (I guess?) reading of the text below, which is just a minor re-casting of Ecclesiastes 1-2 in my own words (but mostly the words of the CEB translation).

This morning at CT I did a dramatic (I guess?) reading of the text below, which is just a minor re-casting of Ecclesiastes 1-2 in my own words (but mostly the words of the CEB translation). The wor…

(Ali here) Today I mentioned this make-up YouTuber in the service and then today she posted this video wherein she talks about a radical redefining of her relationship with shopping, stuff, beautiful things, artistic expression, and giving herself space free from self-criticism. Also all the stuff she bought with her budget in July, like glitter eyeshadow 😜 Still, interesting in that she's someone who is engaging with consumerism in a unique way beyond simply opting out.

Hi friends! I tried something new with the mid-roll ad in this video: I created a little space for it with my title card so that the ad would show during a n...

Join us for our third "Spirits & Spirituality" gathering! Our version of "pub theology" we're choosing to gather over drinks at the new Caboose Commons near Mosaic District in Fairfax/Merrifield July 24th from 7-8:30 pm. In true Common Table fashion, expect more questions than answers. Everyone of any or no faith is welcome. We run the gamut ourselves. Geeks, introverts, and people who maybe have been made to feel like they weren't welcome in church are extra-welcome here. Here are some details on our discussion topic(s) for this month! We'll start by considering these two quotes. Are they two different topics, or might they have something to do with each other? 1) Brian McLaren, in A New Kind of Christianity: "Whatever the final judgment will be, it will not involve God (pardon the crudeness here) pulling down our pants to check for circumcision or scanning our brains for certain beliefs like products being scanned at the grocery checkout." If there is a final judgment, what will it involve? 2) Karen Armstrong in The Great Transformation: "Unless there is some kind of spiritual revolution that can keep abreast of our technological genius, it is unlikely that we will save our planet. A purely rational education will not suffice. We risk environmental catastrophe because we no longer see the earth as holy but regard it simply as a 'resource'." What kind of spiritual revolution? — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2y30zk5

Thomas Merton Prayer (from Thoughts in Solitude, p. 83, adapted) God, we have no idea where we are going. We do not see the road ahead of us. We cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do we really know ourselves, and the fact that we think we are following your will does not mean that we are actually doing so. But we believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And we hope we have that desire in all that we doing. We hope that we will never do anything apart from that desire. And we know that if we do this you will lead us by the right road, though we may know nothing about it. Therefore, we trust you always though we may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. We will not fear, for you are ever with us, and you will never leave us to face our perils alone. We continue to share thoughts and feelings surrounding where the Church of the Common Table might go from here. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2JGt1Po
