From our house to yours, may you have a blessed and joyous Christmas Day. Celebrate Jesus, the best gift ever given for you.

Suddenly … I just cannot hide it
“Suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God …” – Luke 2:13

Is it possible to know joy when joy doesn’t come naturally? Not all of us are born optimists, happy go-lucky, cheerful types. For the depressed, downtrodden, dejected and devastated, is joy possible? Or are we deficient yet again for lacking it?
“Suddenly, there appeared a great multitude …”

As you’re about the daily grind, when maybe nothing in particular is on your mind, certainly not joy … suddenly, wonder of wonders, joy. Joy unspeakable wells up like fruit bursting from a tree.

Through the grace of God
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” – Galatians 5:22-23

Joy is one of those things many of us might struggle to experience. I always think about how fleeting happiness can be. Happiness is dependent upon circumstance.

Many of the commentaries I have read lately share that receiving the joy of the Lord comes from knowing God and being filled with the Holy Spirit.

That deep-rooted spiritual happiness is experienced through relationship with God, by having those conversations where we ask for his divine gifts and his guidance.

Through this Advent season, let’s remember the greatest gift we received of all: our salvation.

Joy in relationship
“Go, eat the festival foods, drink the sweet drinks, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your refuge.” – Nehemiah 8:10

Joy is mentioned more than 100 times in the Bible. In almost every mention of joy, you will find the presence of relationship – not with
people, but with God.

Because God is always near the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available
to all who seek them.

Fear not
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’” – Luke 2:10

These beautiful words were spoken to the shepherds on that first
Christmas morning. A wonderful announcement that the Savior of the world had finally been born.

In John 15, Jesus says “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” This Christmas, let’s put aside our quest for happiness and allow the presence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts to bring the joy that he intended for us and the angels promised.

Share God’s love everywhere
“Whoever believes in me as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow within them.” – John 7:38

Some know of God’s goodness and can’t help but let their rivers flow through drought-stricken valleys by feeding the hungry and bringing water and providing shelter to those who do not have any. Some have turned streams into violent waves, swaying back and forth throughout the nation and seeking to mend what had once been broken. And if it can’t be fixed, it will be made new.

We have an incredible opportunity to show God’s love in all that we do. Take an extra breath each day and show grace to God’s children.

It’s in those little moments that we let our rivers flow and embrace the love God gave us and share it with others.

When love calls
“If we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” – 1 John 4:12

This is the love we celebrate in the Advent season. The exact love demonstrated when God took on human skin and the angels announced the good news so long ago.
That same resurrected Jesus is still transforming people’s lives and fills them with a love that continues to lead to “How did I get here?” moments.

I pray you experience that love in a new and real way this Advent season.
