XVI. NO TURNING BACK DOESN’T MEAN YOU NEVER FALL

This distinction matters.

“No turning back” does not mean:

“A true Christian never fails.”

Peter failed.

David failed.

Thomas doubted.

The disciples abandoned Jesus during His arrest.

The New Testament is full of people who stumbled.

The difference is what they did afterward.

Failure is not the same thing as choosing to remain in rebellion.

A disciple can fall.

But a disciple gets back up.

A disciple repents.

A disciple returns.

A disciple keeps following.

XV. JESUS DOESN’T ACCEPT HALF-HEARTED DISCIPLESHIP

This isn’t because Jesus is cruel.

It’s because divided allegiance destroys discipleship.

Imagine a soldier who says:

“I’ll follow orders—unless I don’t like them.”

Imagine a spouse saying:

“I’ll be faithful—as long as something more interesting doesn’t come along.”

Imagine a pilot saying:

“I’ll follow the flight plan—unless I decide to change direction halfway there.”

Allegiance means something.

And Jesus is calling disciples—not admirers.

XIV. “BUT” IS WHERE MANY DISCIPLES STOP

Let’s examine the language again.

“Lord, I will follow You…”

“But…”

That word can become a spiritual barricade.

“Lord, I’ll forgive, but…”

“Lord, I’ll stop, but…”

“Lord, I’ll obey, but…”

“Lord, I’ll serve, but…”

“Lord, I’ll give, but…”

“Lord, I’ll go, but…”

“Lord, I’ll trust You, but…”

Every “but” isn’t necessarily rebellion.

Sometimes there are legitimate responsibilities and circumstances.

But sometimes “but” is simply another word for:

“I want to remain in control.”

XIII. JESUS ISN’T ASKING FOR A PIECE OF YOUR LIFE

This connects directly to our first two sermons.

The first sermon asked:

“What is your thirty pieces of silver?”

The second asked:

“What are you willing to surrender to follow Jesus?”

Now the third asks:

“Who has your allegiance?”

Jesus isn’t asking for Sunday morning.

He’s not asking for one hour.

He’s not asking for a religious compartment in your life.

He wants the whole disciple.

Your relationships.

Your finances.

Your sexuality.

Your work.

Your speech.

Your private life.

Your entertainment.

Your ambitions.

Your plans.

Your future.

Your past.

Your fears.

Your dreams.

Your time.

Your body.

Your mind.

Your heart.

XII. DIVIDED ALLEGIANCE IS STILL ALLEGIANCE TO SOMETHING ELSE

Jesus said in Matthew 6:24:

“No one can serve two masters…”

Notice:

Two masters.

Not two interests.

Not two hobbies.

Not two preferences.

Two masters.

Eventually, one will take priority.

And Jesus says:

“You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The issue isn’t merely money.

The issue is mastery.

Who owns your allegiance?

XI. THE CROSS WILL COST YOU SOMETHING

If following Jesus never costs you anything, you need to ask yourself whether you’re actually following Him.

Not because suffering earns salvation.

It doesn’t.

Not because we purchase God’s grace.

We don’t.

But because allegiance has consequences.

A marriage costs something.

Parenthood costs something.

Military service costs something.

Building a business costs something.

Anything genuinely valuable requires sacrifice.

Why would we expect discipleship to cost nothing?

The One who gave everything for us calls us to give ourselves to Him.

X. YOU CANNOT WALK FORWARD WHILE CONSTANTLY NEGOTIATING WITH YOUR PAST

Some people want Jesus…

but they keep looking backward.

They miss their old lifestyle.

They miss their old relationships.

They miss their old habits.

They miss their old identity.

They miss the applause.

They miss the party.

They miss the lifestyle.

They miss the control.

And eventually they begin wondering:

“Was following Jesus really worth it?”

That’s dangerous.

Because the enemy doesn’t always have to convince you to hate Jesus.

Sometimes he only needs to convince you to long for what Jesus called you out of.

IX. JESUS USES THE PICTURE OF A FARMER

Jesus’ audience understood this immediately.

A farmer guiding a plow needs to maintain his direction.

If he constantly turns around to look behind him, he cannot keep a straight furrow.

The illustration isn’t about whether a person is physically incapable of glancing backward.

It’s about direction and commitment.

You cannot plow forward effectively while continually orienting yourself toward what you left behind.

And that’s exactly what happens spiritually.

VIII. THE THIRD MAN WANTED TO FOLLOW — BUT HE WANTED TO LOOK BACK

Luke 9:61 says:

“And another also said, ‘Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.’”

Again:

“Lord…”

“I will follow You…”

“But…”

There it is again.

That little word can reveal a huge problem.

Lord, but…

I will follow, but…

I believe, but…

I surrender, but…

I’ll obey, but…

Jesus responds:

“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
