I. JESUS DIDN’T SAY “ADMIRE ME”

Jesus said:

“If anyone desires to come after Me…”

That phrase matters.

Jesus wasn’t speaking exclusively to the Twelve.

He said:

“If anyone…”

This is an open invitation.

Anybody can come.

Anybody can follow.

Anybody can become a disciple.

But the invitation has conditions.

Jesus doesn’t say:

“If anyone wants the benefits of salvation…”

He says:

“If anyone desires to come after Me…”

There is a difference between wanting what Jesus can give you and wanting Jesus Himself.

There are people who want:

His blessing.

His protection.

His healing.

His provision.

His peace.

His promises.

His forgiveness.

But Jesus says:

Follow Me.

Introduction

INTRODUCTION — THERE IS A PRICE TO FOLLOWING JESUS

Last time, we looked at Judas.

He asked the religious leaders:

“What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?”

They counted out thirty pieces of silver.

Judas put a price on Jesus.

But tonight, Jesus turns the question around.

Judas asked:

“What will you give me for Jesus?”

Jesus asks:

“What are you willing to give up to follow Me?”

Those are completely different questions.

Judas wanted something from Jesus.

A disciple is willing to surrender something for Jesus.

And this is where Christianity becomes more than a profession of faith.

Because Jesus never called us merely to admire Him.

He called us to follow Him.

And following Jesus has a cost.

THE COST OF FOLLOWING JESUS

The Price of Discipleship

Primary Text: Matthew 16:24–27 (NKJV)

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.’”

WHAT IS JESUS WORTH TO YOU?
“The Thirty Pieces of Silver”
Sermon series by Bishop Haynes
Sermon 1 Final Declaration

FINAL DECLARATION

I will not sell my obedience for temporary pleasure.

I will not trade holiness for acceptance.

I will not trade truth for comfort.

I will not trade Christ for my secret sin.

I will not allow thirty pieces of silver to become more valuable than my Savior.

I choose Jesus.

I choose obedience.

I choose repentance.

I choose the cross.

I choose to follow Him.

So the question isn’t, “What did Judas receive?”

The question is:

“WHAT ARE YOUR THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER?”

And when you identify them—

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THEM?

WHAT IS JESUS WORTH TO YOU?

Sermon 1 Conclusion

CONCLUSION — THE ALTAR CALL

Today, I don’t want you thinking about Judas.

I want you thinking about you.

If Jesus walked into this room right now and looked directly into your eyes, what would He find?

Would He find surrender?

Or would He find negotiation?

Would He find a disciple?

Or someone trying to keep one foot in the Kingdom and one foot in the world?

Would He find someone willing to say:

“Lord, whatever You ask, I’ll give it to You.”

Or would He find someone saying:

“Lord, I’ll give You everything except this.”

That’s your thirty pieces of silver.

And here’s the hard truth:

Whatever you refuse to surrender to Christ has become more valuable to you than Christ.

Don’t wait until the consequences become greater than the pleasure.

Don’t wait until the relationship destroys your family.

Don’t wait until the addiction destroys your body.

Don’t wait until the lie destroys your credibility.

Don’t wait until the bitterness destroys your soul.

Don’t wait until the thirty pieces of silver are worthless in your hands.

Lay them down now.

Because Jesus is worth more.

More than your secret.

More than your habit.

More than your reputation.

More than your pleasure.

More than your money.

More than your relationship.

More than your comfort.

More than your pride.

Jesus is worth everything.

XII. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR SILVER?

This is where Judas and Peter provide a sobering contrast.

Both failed Jesus.

Both experienced profound remorse.

But their stories ended differently.

Peter returned.

Judas did not.

Failure doesn’t have to be your final chapter.

Your secret sin doesn’t have to remain your master.

Your addiction doesn’t have to define you.

Your bitterness doesn’t have to control you.

Your sexual sin doesn’t have to own you.

Your pride doesn’t have to remain your identity.

Your past doesn’t have to dictate your future.

But you must stop negotiating.

Bring your thirty pieces of silver to the feet of Jesus.

Lay them down.

Confess them.

Repent.

Turn.

Follow.

XI. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEMPTATION AND TREASON

We need to be careful here.

Being tempted doesn’t mean you have betrayed Christ.

Jesus Himself was tempted.

Struggling doesn’t mean you have abandoned Christ.

A Christian can stumble.

A Christian can fall.

A Christian can battle temptation.

But there is a difference between:

“Lord, I fell. Help me get back up.”

and

“Lord, I know this is wrong, but I’m keeping it.”

The first is a battle.

The second is surrender to sin.

The issue isn’t whether you’ve ever fallen.

The issue is:

Are you willing to get up and follow Jesus again?

X. JESUS IS NOT ASKING FOR THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER

Jesus isn’t asking:

“How much money will you give Me?”

He’s asking:

“Will you give Me your life?”

Romans 12:1 says:

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

The Gospel isn’t:

“Repeat this prayer and continue living however you want.”

The Gospel calls us to repentance, faith, surrender, and discipleship.

Jesus said:

“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

The cross isn’t merely something Jesus carried for us.

Jesus said there is also a cross we must be willing to carry after Him.
