Today, September 15th, we celebrate the Memorial Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows. September is traditionally dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
Devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady has its roots in Sacred Scripture and in Christian piety, which always associates the Blessed Mother with her suffering Son. The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows was introduced by the Servites in order to intensify devotion to Our Lady's Sorrows. In 1817 Pope Pius VII - suffering grievously in exile but finally liberated by Mary's intercession - extended the feast to the Universal Church. Pope St. Pius X later fixed the permanent observance on September 15, which falls on the day right after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, September 14.
We invite you to honor our Holy Mother Mary through Mass, the Rosary, Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows, Stabat Mater prayer, works of mercy and quiet prayer with those who are suffering. These are just a few suggestions. Have a blessed Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows.
