Things That Can Be Shaken
In Jesus, we have salvation, security, and steadfast love.

Read: Haggai 2:6-9

God has ways of shaking the world when He is up to something big. He literally caused the ground to quake when Jesus died on the cross and after Pentecost (Matthew 27:51; Acts 4:31). These were none-too-subtle messages which meant, Pay attention because important things are happening!

Today, the ground may not be physically moving, but the Lord is certainly doing some shaking. People too often build their lives on the weak cornerstones of their human wisdom, goodness, and ingenuity. But there is only one secure foundation: Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11).

God always has a purpose for permitting upheaval in His ordered creation. Among other things, He is shaking the church out of its apathy and self-focus, reminding believers not to trust in the temporary structures of this world. Rather, we are to rest upon the safe and firm foundation provided by God’s steadfast love, salvation, and kingdom, which is present here and now.

As the Lord’s ambassadors on earth—and the only ones standing on firm ground—we have a responsibility to offer real hope to those whose foundation has become unstable. No job, government, or even religion can give a person long-term security. A relationship with Jesus Christ is the only lasting refuge.

Measuring for Growth
Faith grows through hardship—if we choose to believe that God is always working for our good.

Read: Ephesians 4:14-16

In today’s reading, Paul writes, “We are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head” (Eph. 4:15). As believers, we should constantly strive to grow closer to God. When He is the Lord of our life, certain characteristics will be evident. Here are two spiritual benchmarks to help us evaluate our progress:

We know we’re growing spiritually when we become increasingly aware of our sinfulness and respond with quick repentance. Failure to deal with sin is rebellion against God. Growing believers turn away from wrongdoing and embrace righteousness. As we live a life of dependence and repentance, our desire to obey God intensifies and the attraction of sin diminishes.

Spiritual growth is also marked by an increase in two things—joy and struggle. Faith is often developed through hardship; in fact, we will more easily grasp how they are connected when we practice living with trust and endurance. So our relationship with the Lord will deepen when we view trials and temptations as opportunities for us to mature (James 1:2-4).

The sovereign God is the gatekeeper of our life. We are maturing when we perceive whatever comes our way as being allowed by our Father and realize He’s working every situation for good.

Training to See God
Ask God to help you see the evidence of His love and power in your life.

Read: Proverbs 3:24-26

David was confident that the Lord was always with him (Psalm 16:8). His psalms reveal he was well aware of God’s intimate involvement in his life. Like David, we should train our spiritual eyes to notice evidence of the heavenly Father’s presence.

Seeing with spiritual eyes isn’t a now-and-then kind of thing—it’s a lifestyle. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). Those who walk with the Lord can take captive unholy thoughts, habits, attitudes, and words. They can cast out sin and live in righteousness. As a result, such believers have a spiritual clarity that sharpens their awareness of God’s presence and role in their life.

When you lie down and talk to the Lord before going to sleep, try to recall the events of your day. What you’re really doing is looking for evidence of God’s hand at work. How did He guide a decision? Answer a question? Protect you in a situation? Help you in a relationship? Appreciating the Lord’s handiwork will etch the reality of His love deeper in your heart.

For us as believers, evidence of God’s great power is everywhere in our life, if only we will see it. Viewing the world with wide-open spiritual eyes changes our perspective. We can live confident in our loving, omnipotent God, who dwells within us.
