One of the greatest challenges of community life is correcting those who go astray. Correcting others can be a source of contentions and it could also be dangerous. In the First Reading, God is commanding Ezekiel to be the watchman for the House of Israel and to correct those who have gone astray. Ezekiel is to tell the Israelites all he hears from God. If Ezekiel does not warn the wicked to repent, he himself will be responsible for their death and guilt. God will save Ezekiel only if he becomes the watchman and warn his compatriots of all that the Lord says.

Today's Gospel comes from what is often called "Jesus' discourse on church life." Jesus is teaching us how to correct one another when necessary. All the members of His community, the Church, have a responsibility for one another. As Ezekiel was the watchman of the house of Israel, calling his compatriots to repentance, so must we act as people who care and correct each other. This is an expression of how we love our neighbor.

Thank you very much to all of our sponsors, golfers and volunteers for supporting our Youth Ministry programs. Your generous support for Tee Off for Teens is helping bring young people in our community closer to Christ. In addition, you are helping form intentional disciples who are bringing the Gospel message to their schools, their sports and other activities where they participate. This would not be possible without a tremendous amount of generosity. Thank you again for supporting our 2nd Annual Tee Off for Teens Golf Tournament. We look forward to seeing everyone next year! The First Reading today, taken from the Prophet Jeremiah chapter 20, relates one of the most difficult moments in Jeremiah's life. Jeremiah is overwhelmed by the opposition and resistance his prophetic ministry has aroused. Jeremiah accuses God of having tricked him when He called him to be a prophet. Even though Jeremiah's ministry has brought him such suffering, God's word is like a fire burning within him that he cannot extinguish but must proclaim.

Today's responsorial psalm, taken from Psalm 63, expresses Jeremiah's sentiments. Although afflicted and persecuted, he pines and thirsts for the living God: "My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God." As we sing this refrain, we are praying in the voice of Jeremiah and in the voice of Jesus, both of whom longed for the Lord in the midst of their sufferings.

One of the challenges of faith is to think and view things, especially suffering, with the mind of God. Jesus has some harsh words for St. Peter in today's Gospel because St. Peter is thinking in human terms of a messiah who will become a temporal king. Jesus' kingdom is not of this world, which is why His rebuke to St. Peter was so harsh. As we take up our cross to follow Jesus, let us pray that we may, as St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading, "...be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect."

Today's readings provide examples of the Lord entrusting faithful servants with the mission of the faith. St. Matthew's account of St. Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi is more developed than the parallel accounts of this event found in the Gospels of St. Mark and St. Luke. First, in his confession, St. Peter identifies Jesus as the Christ, "the Son of the Living God." Second, Jesus affirms that St. Peter's confession is not the outcome of his personal insight into Jesus but the result of a revelation the heavenly Father gave him. Third, Jesus gives St. Peter a new name. Whereas he was formerly known as "Simon," he will now be known as "Peter," which in Aramaic (Kephas) means "rock." St. Peter is the rock on which Jesus will build His Church. Since St. Peter is the foundation of Jesus' new community, with the power to bind and loose, not even the powers of the netherworld will overcome it.
