Dear friends, today we acknowledge and remember the beautiful day so many years ago, when Jesus, just a few days before His crucifixion, rode triumphantly into Jerusalem. The multitudes, including many children, cheered him and honored him, and sung praises to Him.
I wish that I could have been there to be part of this joyful event, to be caught up in the excitement of this wonderful day. Can you visualize the scene – just picture Jesus sitting on the donkey, riding slowly into Jerusalem. All the people lined the crude streets on both sides, waving palm branches, and throwing flowers in his path. The children had made garlands of flowers, and placed them around his neck. People were cheering and praising Him, and hailing him as their King.
Children played a large role in Jesus’ joyous entry into Jerusalem. Children’s joy is a wonderful thing to observe and experience. They hold back nothing, and their excitement is free, and unrestrained, and genuine. And the adults that lined the streets, cheering and praising Him, were also unrestrained in their shouts of “All Hail the King – Long Live The King. Hosanna to the Lord of hosts.”
Everyone there was caught up in the Glory of The Lord. Joy took them over, and they expressed the Love that was in their hearts, and on that beautiful day so many years ago, they truly recognized the Divinity and power and Love of this humble Man from Galilee, who, in three short years of his ministry, captured their deepest respect and admiration. They experienced the deepest joy that any human being could ever experience. It stirred their emotions, and they openly worshipped Jesus, and realized that He was sent by God to save them, to teach them, to Heal them.
When Jesus entered into Jerusalem, he went immediately to the porch of the Temple, and it was filled by so many people, waiting to see and hear the wonderful words this king and prophet. He paused, and came to many that could not see, or walk, or were very ill. He spoke the sacred word, and laid His gentle hands upon them, and cured them. He healed them all that day- the ones who came to Him, asking for a touch of His Light and strength in their sick bodies.
The temple and the temple courtyards were filled with children praising God. They said “Hosanna to the King. The son of David is the King! All hail the King. Praise God!
This adoration and recognition from the mass of people, and especially from the children, angered the Pharisees, which were the local religious priests and authorities of that time. They were jealous of Jesus. They wanted to maintain supreme control over the masses. They did not want their place in life to be jeopardized. Jesus had warned the people to beware of the scribes and Pharisees who pride themselves in wearing long and richly decorated robes, and love to be saluted in the marketplace, and seek the highest seats at feasts, and take the hard-earned wages of the poor to satisfy their carnal selves. Jesus called these Pharisees wolves in sheep’s clothing. Jesus said that they say the things that Moses taught, but to the things of Beelzebub.
Well, the local religious authorities, the priests Pharisees, could not stand by, and let this humble man put them to shame, so they began to scheme to put him to death. So in Jerusalem, they made plans to seize the Lord, and take his life. The high priest called in council, all the wisest men and said the the deed must be accomplished in a secret way. They wanted to arrest Jesus in the place where He and his disciples met privately to pray and meditate. They bribed Judas to lead them to the place where Jesus prayed. He agreed to the deed, for 30 pieces of silver!
Jesus was arrested, and indicted by seven ruling Jews. The Jewish authorities bribed a hundred perjured witnesses to testify to the truth of the false charges. They accused him of blasphemy and profaning the holy days by healing and doing work on the Sabbath day.
These “authorities” were so afraid of losing their power over the people, that they paid off so many in their circle, to lie, and to perpetuate the false charges against Jesus. They worked on the crowds of people who had so recently worshipped Jesus on that Palm Sunday, just a few days earlier. With their lust for power and their gift of twisting words to their advantage, they used their “gift of gab” so to speak, to turn the tide of admiration of the people, to distrust and anger. They worked the crowds with their lies, and their venom, to convince the masses that Jesus was a threat to their religion. The people were led like sheep to turn against this wonderful, loving son of God. How quickly did their adoration turn to hatred. They listened with their ears, instead of their hearts and souls. They reverted to their earthly tendencies and fell in step with the men who had been bribed to lie about Jesus. They had turned their hero, the son of God, into a man befitting crucifixion.
We all remember the story of the crucifixion and death of Jesus. How he suffered and died for our sins. We also remember how he asked His Father to forgive the people, for they know not what they do. With his last dying breaths, he forgave them, and left his battered, and violated body.
Dear friends, let us not forget that we are so much like that large crowd of people walking with Jesus, as he rode upon the donkey, to Jerusalem. They praised and honored him, and were so full of love and respect and joy for him. A day like no other, in the history of humankind. It is the day that the people let go, and let God lead them into a state of supreme joy, and highest spiritual vibration.
And what happened to these people just a few days later? They listened to the lies of those who were bribed to betray him and falsely accused him. The people reverted to their very human side, their earthly vibration, and allowed themselves to be deceived by liars, and power hungry “leaders”. They fell into the trap of human ego and deceit and got caught up in the mob frenzy of hatred, at Jesus’ indictment. They turned on him, and begun to falsely accuse him also. They got so worked up in the frenzy, that they shouted for his crucifixion and death. They lost touch with their true self – their divine connection with God. They stopped being a spiritual beings, and became hate-filled, blood hungry masses. They lost their God connection. They lost touch with reality. They followed the masses. They lost their joy, their divinity, and they blackened their soul.
My friends, isn’t that what we do most of our lives? We believe the stuff we see on TV, we listen to our negative co-workers and friends, and get fired up with all the wrong emotions? It is becoming hip to be a pagan, an agnostic, a person who does not believe in God. Look around you. The joy is gone. The joy that was seen on that Palm Sunday is gone. How little people smile today. When you hear people laughing together, you have to look at them, because it is a rarity in today’s world.
The scribes and Pharisees of this modern time period have taken over. They have gotten your attention, and filled you full of lies and hate, and have turned off your joy, and turned on your very human feelings of greed and lust, and hatred and mistrust! We have turned against the beautiful teachings of Jesus. We are losing our connection. Losing our way – stumbling along the paths of darkness and misery.
Don’t let the scribes and Pharisees win, my friends. Affirm your true identity. You are a child of God. You are a being of Light. You are a being of Joy. Our divine self is joy-filled, and pure, and full of Light. We pollute ourselves. We turn our smiles into frowns. We dim our own Lights. It is us. We allow it to happen. We bring ourselves down. We put up our barriers, and block the joy, and let in the gloom.
I want you all to remember during the course of this week, that wonderful Palm Sunday. I want you to visualize the Peace and Gentleness on Jesus’ face, as he rode into Jerusalem. I want you to visualize the look of peace and respect and adoration of the masses of people and children who followed him along the way. The pure, undiluted completely natural joy! Remember it, and know that it is yours for the asking. It is yours when you open yourself to divine guidance, instead of earthly influences.
During your quiet moments of prayer and meditation this week, remember Palm Sunday, and its beautiful spiritual vibration. Let it guide the path to your Jerusalem. The blessings of that day can light your every path, and brighten your every day. Remember the glory of that day, and hold it ever so close to your hearts. Hosanna to the King.
Thank you, and May all God’s blessings be yours.
