“…YOU THROW THE FIRST STONE!”
Bryant Wright, Founder

“Jesus stooped down and with his finger, He wrote on the ground.”
John 8:6

The Pharisees had just brought an adulteress before Jesus and demanded, “Jesus, what do you say?”

Silence. Just writing in the sand.

The Bible doesn’t tell us what Jesus wrote in the sand that day.

Maybe He wrote Scripture.
Perhaps He was writing, “Where is the man? Doesn’t adultery involve two?”
He could have been writing the sins of the Pharisees who were accusing this woman.
Maybe Jesus just needed time to collect His thoughts because they were hoping to get at Him by humiliating this woman.
I have no idea what He wrote, but I’ll tell you what I believe was taking place.

I believe that Jesus’ heart was absolutely breaking as He knelt in the sand. When He looked at this woman, His passion for the lost caused His heart to break at how she was being treated as an object, unworthy of life. His heart was also breaking because He looked at the Pharisees and realized they just didn’t get it. Jesus would have been totally justified to get in the Pharisees’ faces and say, “You guys don’t get it! (my paraphrase) I came not to judge but to save.” John 3:17

But Jesus didn’t say that. He didn’t blow His top and blast them. In an amazing display of self-control and compassion for this woman, He finally stood and said,

“Whoever is without sin, you throw the first stone.” John 8:7

They slowly drifted away, dropping their stones as they left. Jesus, in a single moment, transferred the humiliation from the woman to the religious men.

What wisdom.

What a man, this Jesus.

You gotta love Him. I surely do.

How about you?

MINDFUL HOPE
By George Wright

“Therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:13

Being “sober-minded” is a pretty interesting directive, isn’t it?

What does it mean? Well, it probably doesn’t mean what you think it does.

Let’s rewind first.

If you are a Christian, you claim you have trusted your life to Jesus Christ, and have been saved by his grace through faith in His finished work on the cross and resurrection. Because of this, you are made new and called righteous in the sight of God– not because of what you have done– but because of what has been done for you.

If this is true for you, there are implications for how you live in light of what Christ has done on your behalf. One such implication is to engage our minds in thinking deeply about the gospel.

The phrase “preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded” could also be translated as “gird up the loins of your minds and think clearly.” So, to answer the previous question, to be “sober-minded” is to think clearly about your life in Christ.

The gift of the gospel calls us to a new, mindful way of thinking and living. What we believe is revealed in how we live. Therefore, we should engage our minds to study the truth of God’s word and build our lives on the gospel so that our actions testify to our beliefs.

The ultimate goal of preparing our minds for action is to fully grasp the hope of grace that will be brought to us when Christ returns. It is important to note that “hope” in the Bible is not wishful thinking. When it says, “Set your hope fully on the grace of Jesus Christ,” it is pointing to something certain. It directs our hope to be mindful– built upon what God has said and done.

Then the promise of grace is certain because of Christ’s finished work at the cross and His resurrection. This promise of grace is the foundation on which we stand. It is the source of our hope, which flows to us from a loving Father who sees and meets us in our needs.

On whom or what is your hope based?

If it’s not based on Jesus, my friend, your hope is misplaced. Let today be the day that you “Set your hope fully on the grace of Jesus Christ.”

LEADERSHIP IS NOT CARRYING IT ALL
Bryant Wright, Founder

“You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” Exodus 18:18

“You must multiply yourselves through others. You cannot do the job alone.” – George B. Wright, Sr.

One of the greatest lessons of leadership is found in the story of Moses, one of history’s greatest leaders.

Moses often dealt with seemingly never-ending lines of people wanting to see him.

Seeing this day after day, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, offered him some unsolicited, but incredibly valuable advice. “This isn’t good,” Jethro said to Moses. “Not only will you eventually burn out, but the people will become increasingly frustrated” (my paraphrase).

That’s when he taught Moses about delegation in leadership – a valuable key to success for any leader.

Thankfully, Moses was humble enough to listen to his father-in-law’s advice and he began choosing leaders according to their abilities. He trained them on how to respond to the needs of the people, placed them in positions of authority, and gave them the responsibility to get the job done. Moses told his team to bring him the toughest issues. This was a turning point in Moses’ leadership. You can read the full story in Exodus 18:13-27. It really is one of the greatest leadership stories.

Of course, no one better exemplified this sentiment than Jesus Christ. Jesus chose His twelve disciples, taught them, demonstrated how to live, and finally commissioned them to go into the world in His name.

And sure enough, those twelve men changed the world.

If you’re looking for a leadership example, look to Jesus and how He led through delegation.
