Chapters to Read Today - Judges 2 – The Canaanite tribes that Israel failed to destroy, enticed the Israelites into the sin of rejecting God and worshiping their pagan gods. This set up the cycle of Sin, Suffering, Supplication (pleading), Salvation described in Judges.

Judges 4 - The decisive victory of Deborah and Barak (verses 14-15) delivered Israel from oppression. Deborah was a prophetess and judge (verse 4). Scripture tells us about three other faithful prophetesses.

Chapters to Read Today - Joshua 24 - God's readiness to deliver us, as He did Israel (verses 1-13) should bring a response from us (verses 14, 24).

THE BOOK OF JUDGES
Judges ruled for some of the periods in the over 400 years, from the death of Joshua until Samuel. During this time, Israel often turned to idolatry. When they did this, God delivered them into the hands of their enemies. When this caused them to repent, He raised up 'judges' or leaders to save them. See Judges 2:16-19.

Judges like Deborah and Barak, Gideon, and Samson were people of great faith. They were included in the list of those who had outstanding faith (Hebrews 11).

Judges 1 - Joshua, who had led the Israelites into the land, died. The people failed to complete the destruction of the pagan tribes in the land that God had commanded. (Deuteronomy 7: 1-6)

Chapters to Read Today - Joshua 9. The Gibeonites tricked the Israelites into sparing them from destruction along with the other inhabitants in the land by wearing old, dusty clothes and pretending they came from a long distance away. Because the Israelites made a covenant with them without consulting the LORD, the Gibeonites were not killed or their cities destroyed. They were, however, enslaved by the Israelites as hewers of wood and suppliers of water.

Joshua 22. Three tribes were to be located on the east side of the Jordan, separated from the other tribes by the river. When they took over their territory in Gilead, they built a large altar on the west side of the Jordan, visible from their territory on the east. The other tribes heard rumors about this and were ready to go to war because they thought these tribes were rebelling. Calmer heads suggested a conference, determined the real reason for the altar and averted the war.

Chapters to Read Today - Joshua 4 - Israel crossed the Jordan to enter the Promised Land. Thus, the promises to Abraham begin to blossom. Centuries later, they were made sure in Jesus Christ.

Joshua 6 - The walls of Jericho come tumbling down and its ruins are known today. Rahab's faith was not forgotten and the promise to save her was kept.

06/01/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Joshua 2 - Rahab's acceptance of God's people was evidence of her FAITH (Verses 8-11). See Hebrews 11:31. Notice the reputation of Israel, some of it remembered for 40 years (2:10).

Joshua 3 - The Ark of the Covenant (verse 11) went across the Jordan River first. God led the way to the Kingdom for Israel as Jesus does for us.

05/31/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Deuteronomy 34 - Moses dies and is buried by God. The place of his burial is not told to Israel. The leadership of the nation passes to Joshua.

THE CONQUEST OF CANAAN
At the time of Joshua, the Land of Promise was inhabited by the Amorites and Canaanites who were idolatrous and filthy in their way of life. God had waited a long time before bringing punishment upon them (Genesis 15:16).

Because God was with Israel, they were able to overcome the people of the land. They were to destroy them before inhabiting the territory, so that they should not be influenced by them and fall into the same sins. The conquest of the Land, under Joshua, was miraculous.

But later, faithlessness and compromise by Israel resulted in many of God's enemies remaining in the Land, only to cause trouble later.

Joshua 1 - Joshua (like Jesus) made daily meditation in God's Word a rule for good success (verse 8).

05/30/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Deuteronomy 31 - Moses speaks to the people shortly before his death to both encourage them and to prophecy that they would sin and rebel against God. He introduces the Song of Moses about these things, given in chapter 32.

Acts 11 - Gentiles as well as Jews can inherit the promises of life (verse 18). Notice the first occurrence of the word 'Christian' (verse 26)

05/29/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Deuteronomy 26 - The people of Israel were to each make a special offering to the Lord from the crops harvested in the third year they were in the land. They would be settled by then and able to grow bountiful harvests. They were also to give gifts from the harvest to the Levites and the needy.

Acts 10 - Even a good living man like Cornelius (verse 2) had to learn what he must do. He believed (verses 42-43) and was baptized (verse 48).

05/28/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Deuteronomy 18 - Jesus is THE PROPHET like Moses (verses 15,18) to whom we should hearken. Compare with Acts 3:22-26.

Acts 9 - Paul too believed and was baptized (verse 18). See Acts 22:16. His sins were forgiven at baptism.

05/27/2026

Chapters to Read Today - Deuteronomy 17 - Idol worship by any Israelite proved by the testimony of two or three witnesses was punishable by death by stoning. Each new king was to personally write out a copy of the Law of Moses and to read from it all his life, obeying it and fearing God.

Acts 8 - Notice the continued importance of belief in the things concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, followed by baptism (verses 12, 37-38).
