Erik's Travel Diary, # 10:

Speaking of birds, storks are everywhere in this country, and they build their nests atop of telephone poles in villages and towns. Yesterday I finally stopped and took a picture of one.

I also swam in the Black Sea yesterday. Here is a picture of it from my hotel room in Constanta as well as a picture of the pot of carnations on my sill. I shall swim in the sea today as well; all of Europe is under a heat dome now.

This will be my last post. Tomorrow it’s back to Bucharest and Monday I fly home. Look forward to seeing you all.

Erik's Travel Diary, # 9:

Yesterday we drove seven hours down to the Danube Delta near the Black Sea, where we will be on the beach the next two days.

A reservations snafu compelled me to book some rooms last-minute wherever I could find them. But I had no idea that the hotel I found was on an island. I had to scramble to hire a Russian to ferry us on his boat.

The boat ride took about forty minutes and was sublime. A real happy accident. These shots are from lakes and tributaries connected to the legendary Danube, Europe’s second-longest river. Lots of birds in these shots, Peg Whiting.

Also got a good panoramic view of the mountains today.

And some shots of flowers because I have never been anywhere where there are more flowers—gardens, yards, the city, pots in front of houses, really just everywhere. Even Deb Michelsen would say to the Rumanians, “Bit much, don’t you think?”

Two more painted churches today. I won’t deluge with pictures, but play the video because at one a service was going on, and so you can hear the chanting of the liturgy between the priest and the choir. It’s lovely.

Today we drove from west to east Rumania through mountains and hills that is some of the most beautiful landscape I’ve ever seen.

In small villages, in front of their houses, people sold cherries they picked from trees in their yard. We bought two big bags.

And we arrived at our first painted Orthodox monastery. It is from the 1600s, and no one knows how this paint has lasted so long. It was a remarkable place to visit, beyond belief, really.
