There’s a quiet verse at the start of Holy Week that I keep coming back to. After the crowds, the palm branches, the shouts of praise—everything settles. And we’re told, almost in passing:
“Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything…” (Gospel of Mark 11:11)
He looked around at everything. He sees a place meant for prayer—now filled with noise. A place meant for all nations—now crowding the nations out. A people near to God in location—but far from him in heart. He sees it all. And he knows what this temple was meant to be… and what it has become.
What happens next is not quiet at all. Jesus steps into the week to confront sin—clearing what blocks the nations, exposing what hardens hearts, and ultimately removing the barrier that separates us from God. And when that work is finished, the curtain of the temple—the very symbol of sin's separation—will be torn in two.
As Jesus stands in the quiet and looks at everything, he sees our need and what he came to do. See the heart of God in that moment: the King who steps into the moment to remove every barrier to bring his people near.
