25. Judges 8:22 – 32

The latter part of Judges chapter 8 is a sad commentary on an otherwise good man and judge of Israel – Gideon. Though he claimed he did not want to be king – that God should rule over Israel – his actions said otherwise. Gideon became guilty of idolatry, and also violated the laws of God relative to marriage. His fall is yet another reminder that the best of God’s people can fall out of favor with God, and it behooves us constantly to evaluate our lives considering such.

Scoffers and the Lord’s Return

2 Peter 3:1 – 9 reminds us of the Lord’s return, and the fact that there are those who ridicule the very idea of such. Peter says scoffers are to be expected, God’s Word is consistent – He keeps His promises, the passing of time does not indicate slowness on the part of God, and the delay in God’s sending His Son is due to His giving wicked man a chance to repent and do better. May we all take advantage of the patience of God before that patience runs out!

Unified Labor

As our nation celebrates Labor Day this Monday, this lesson examines one verse of scripture – 1 Corinthians 3:9 – as it relates to our working in God’s kingdom. Paul reminds us we are workers – we are workers together – and we are workers together with God. To the work!

12. Philippians 3:15 – 21

Paul addresses Christians, sometimes referred to as “heaven-bound people living in a hell-bound world” and admonishes them to follow him as he followed the Lord. While most are bent on serving sensual desires, the Christian focuses his life on the heavenly, having a heavenly citizenship, a heavenly Father, and a heavenly Lord Who will one day return as Savior of His people and as Judge of the rest.

John 5:1 – 9 relates the incident of Jesus healing a sick man; this account pictures for us the ability of Jesus to heal our souls.

24. Judges 8:10 – 21

This text relates the beginning of the spiritual decline of Gideon. Though he himself did not want to become king, he started acting as one in seeking to fulfill a personal vendetta he had against the Midianite kings, Zeba and Zalmunna, who had earlier killed his brothers. His is yet another reminder of the frailty of “heroes” who are all fallible; instead, our trust should be in the Lord Who is infinitely infallible.
