🔥 “I will work as if everything depended upon me, and pray as if everything depended upon God.” – Robert Morrison
Robert Morrison (1782–1834) was a British Presbyterian minister and the London Missionary Society’s first missionary to China. He arrived in Macao in 1807, worked in Canton under heavy restrictions, translated the whole Bible into Chinese, compiled a major Chinese dictionary, and became widely remembered as a pioneer of Protestant missions in China.
Morrison’s life carried the weight of patient obedience. China did not open easily to him. Converts were few at first. The language was difficult, the restrictions were severe, and much of the work had to be done quietly. Yet he kept laboring. Scripture, translation, prayer, and perseverance became his daily field.
His words hold two truths together without confusion. Work must be faithful. Prayer must be dependent. A servant of Christ has no permission to be idle because God is sovereign, and no permission to be proud because he has labored. “Paul may plant, and Apollos water, but God gave the increase” 1 Corinthians 3:6.
Morrison’s ministry reminds the Church that hidden obedience can shape generations. The first years may look small. The harvest may seem far away. Still, God sees the man who works carefully, prays deeply, and gives himself to a task whose fruit may be greater after his death than during his life. 🔥
