This past weekend, Pastor Mark reminded us how much our hands remember. The itsy-bitsy spider went up the water spout… Rock, paper, scissors, shoot! And of course, Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors and see all the people!
Fun little motions we learned as children, but on Labor Day, they make us think about just how much these hands of ours have done.
Our hands have worked, cooked, cleaned, built, planted, typed, cared for children, held the hands of people we love, and reached out to people who needed us. Some of that work earned a paycheck and much of it never did, but all of it matters. And Jesus reminds us in our Gospel that even being community takes work…a lot of work… the work of listening, forgiving, reconciling, and continuing to gather together in love.
Maybe that old rhyme gets it right: Open the doors and see all the people. Because the church has never really been about the steeple; it is about God’s people, gathered together and sent out again.
So on this Labor Day, may God bless the work we have done, the rest we need, and these hands that still have plenty of God’s work left to do. Amen.
