USD St. Thomas More Newman Center

USD St. Thomas More Newman Center Coyote Catholic is the official account of the St. Thomas More Newman Center on the University of South Dakota campus.

We are a Catholic community on the USD campus that seeks to welcome all into the beauty and truth of the love of Jesus Christ through His church. We welcome all to our formational, social, and service events every week. The Newman Center is your home away from home during your time at USD. With room to pray, study, relax, and enjoy fellowship with a community of friends striving after a life of Faith, the Newman Center is open 24-hours, including a Chapel with the Blessed Sacrament.

Wow!! Over the course of this school year, 27 students have been confirmed at the Newman Center. With two additional students receiving the Sacrament at their home parishes, that brings the total to 29 students in our community entering more fully into the life of the Church!

Thank you to everyone who has supported these students on their journey of faith. It has been a true blessing to witness the joy they bring not only to the Newman Center, but across campus. We are excited to see the ways they will continue to carry that faith forward into the world!

Go Yotes! Go Jesus!

Over Spring Break, nearly two dozen students, along with our FOCUS missionaries and Fr. John, traveled to Peru for a week-long mission trip. During their time there, the group built stoves, brought supplies to schools, chopped wood, delivered food and shared the sacraments with the local villages. The trip was also filled with moments of prayer, fellowship and games!

Lasting memories were made, and the friendships formed during the trip have already had a positive impact on the community back at the Newman Center. We are excited to see how the Lord will continue to work through this experience and reveal its fruits in the lives of our students and their friends!

We want to share a few photos from the trip below. Be sure to look out for more photos in the future!

As we return from Spring Break this week, we are reminded of the long tradition of mission at the Newman Center. Over the years, students have used this time to step away from campus and serve others, growing in fellowship and encountering Christ in the communities they visit. These trips offer a unique opportunity to see the presence of Jesus in a new way, while also strengthening friendships and deepening faith.

We took a look through the Newman Archives and pulled together some photos to share below. While they don’t capture every trip or every location, they give a glimpse into the joy, service, and experiences that have shaped generations of students on mission!

“As Lent is the time for greater love, listen to Jesus’ thirst. He knows your weakness. He wants only your love, wants only the chance to love you.”
-St. Teresa of Calcutta

We hope you have a blessed Lent!

What a start to the semester! We kicked off the spring semester in a powerful way at SEEK 2026 in Columbus, Ohio. Our students stepped away from their daily routines and immersed themselves in a week centered on encountering Christ through prayer, inspiring talks, worship, and meaningful time together as a campus community. From late night travel and shared laughter on the road, to Adoration in a packed convention hall and Mass with thousands of college students, SEEK invited our students to grow deeper in their faith. They returned to USD renewed, joyful, and ready to live out the mission in their everyday lives.

That momentum has carried into the semester! Intramurals are in full swing, with Newman teams competing in basketball, dodgeball, pickleball, and soccer. Through these teams, the students are building friendships and growing in teamwork and community.

Bible studies are also filling the Newman Center throughout the week, with nearly every room occupied as students gather to dive into Scripture. Organized by grade, Greek house, friend group, and sport, these studies continue to be a cornerstone of our mission, forming students in faith and authentic friendship.

And of course, Dollar Dinners remain a highlight each week, bringing students together around the table for a great conversation and a homecooked meal.

We are now excited to head into Lent, trusting that the Lord will continue to deepen the work He has already started in the hearts of our students this semester!

We are joyful to share that this fall, Kaden Weatherby and Joseph Bulfer received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Newman Center!

Confirmation is a powerful moment in the life of the Church, as the Holy Spirit strengthens these men to live out their faith more boldly. It is a blessing to witness their yes to Jesus and to see how God continues to work in the hearts of our students.

We are grateful for all those who walked with them along the way and for your continued support of this mission. Please keep Kaden and Joseph in your prayers as they continue their journey of faith!
