We welcome and celebrate all adults, children and youth regardless of faith, creed, race, color, ethnic or national origin; sexual orientation, gender, or gender expression; age, mental or physical ability, economic status, or political affiliation. Music Service Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Vashon Island Unitarian Universalists

May 24th, 2026 - 9:45am

Today as we celebrate our 70 year history in many different ways, we will be doing a lot of the celebrating through music. We will sing for the Chalice Lighting as we begin and we will be singing for the Chalice Extinguishing as we close.

We are so pleased to have Mark Wells, Jean Richstad, Dan Brown, and Leslie McMichael with us – and our valiant drummers here to greet you when you arrive. I hope you’ll all sing along when your parts come up.

Some of the songs we’ll be singing are by Unitarians, some by Universalists, some by “Free Thinkers”, some are chosen for those who are “Questioning, Doubting and Uncertain” and some songs we will be singing just because we like them.

On a different note, this service will also include “A Remembrance of Those Who Have Gone Before” given by Ann Lewis. For loss is part of each life and has been part of the story of this congregation as well.

Curiosity’s Path to Discovering Happiness
May 17th, 2026 @ 9:45am

Quote by Julia Cameron: “And when we have the grace to be a beginner, we have the beginner’s humility and openness to exploration. Exploration leads to accomplishments. The beginning though, can be a scary step.”

The VIUU Annual Meeting will follow the service.

Mother’s Day for Everyone
May 10th, 2025 @ 9:45am
with Rev. Florence Caplow

Every one of us had a mother, and some of us are biological mothers, and some of us (regardless of our gender) have nurtured and mothered others, but the form that motherhood and mothering takes is as varied as all the ways of being human, from the highest joy to the deepest pain. In this service on Mother’s Day, led by Rev. Florence Caplow, we will honor these many forms of mothering and being mothered, and all are welcome, whatever this day means to you.

Flower Communion
May 3rd, 2026 - 9:45am

The Flower Communion is a tender ritual of community and love, exemplified by the giving and receiving of flowers in our Sunday Service.

Please remember to bring a flower to share. It does not have to be fancy; perhaps you find it on the road! We will place our flowers in collective vases to share, and later receive.

All are welcome!

Join us in person at Lewis Hall, or on zoom.

Embracing Possibility
April 26th, 2026 @ 9:45am

From the Transcending Mystery & Wonder team:

Embracing Possibility is another challenging theme for this month and this service. Each of us has reflected on how to live into this concept, and to describe our reflections in a way that’s personal, spiritual and relatable. We hope it opens up new possibilities for you.

SAVE the DATE! Saturday, May 9
1:30 - 3:30
Lewis Hall, Vashon

The Vashon Island Unitarian Universalists together with the Friends of Thunderbird, The Vashon Maury Island Land Trust, Vashon-Maury SURJ and the Vashon Heritage Museum invite you to a special afternoon with Ramona Bennett Bill (Puyallup), longtime tribal leader, activist, and author of Fighting for the Puyallup. Ms. Bennett Bill will share stories from her life, discuss the history behind the fight for tribal rights, and read from her book. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Joy, Despite it All
April 12th, 2026 @ 9:45am

When there is so much to fear and grieve these days, can there be joy as well? And what does “joy” mean, anyway, especially now?

Rev. Florence Caplow will be exploring these questions with us through stories, poetry, and songs. The Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield wrote, “Joy is our birthright…To be joyful does not mean ignoring the great measure of suffering in the world…joy enables us to be a part of the solution to suffering.”

Speaking of joy, we will also be welcoming new members to VIUU as part of this service!

Feeding Joy
April 5th, 2026 @ 9:45am

This Easter Sunday, this Passover, what might legend and neuroscience teach us about cultivating joy within us even as threats abound and the world around us grows increasingly unsafe?

We are honored to welcome back UU Minister Rev. Emily Melcher.
