In response to the catastrophic flash flooding that occurred along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, UMCOR is awarding a solidarity grant to support United Mission Nepal as they aid impacted communities in Dhading and Nuwakot districts with emergency food and non-food item (NFI) assistance. Alongside this grant, UMCOR is continuing to explore opportunities for further response through our partner networks and local assessments.

Please remain in prayer for these communities as the toll of this disaster continues to worsen. Authorities now report that at least 579 people have died and 1,924 people remain missing, with these numbers expected to grow as some areas remain inaccessible. Search and rescue teams are still working to reach communities cut off by the disaster, with damaged roads, landslides, and communications disruptions hindering relief operations and making it difficult to fully assess needs.

We lift up this call for prayer, presence, and continued accompaniment from the Rev. Jung Eun Grace Moon, general secretary of the Christian Conference of Asia, ecumenical partner of The United Methodist Church: โ€œIn this time of profound loss and suffering, may Godโ€™s comforting presence draw near to all those affected, embrace those who grieve, strengthen those who search and serve, shelter those who have lost their homes and kindle a light of hope amid the darkness.โ€

"Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." ๐Ÿ“– Matthew 18:19-20

Jesus noted that heaven is enacted in the midst of community. When we connect with one another for mutual support, care, and accountability, we encounter a bit of God's desired connect for all people. We uplift one another.

Who do you find it agreeable to gather with in Jesus' name? Who is an important part of your faith community?

How are you giving thanks today?

"Now Thank We All Our God", number 102 in The United Methodist Hymnal, invites us to consider what we have received from God, and how we might proclaim our gratitude. Surprisingly, the words for the hymn were written amidst struggle and want, as Martin Rinckart and his family were refugees during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).

๐ŸŽถ"Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mothersโ€™ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today." ๐ŸŽน

"All are welcome here."

It's on the sign outside a lot of churches. And it's probably even true in the sense that nobody gets stopped at the door.

But saying it doesn't make it true, and it's not the same thing as a church actually doing the work.

The Book of Discipline's discriminatory language was removed at the 2024 General Conference, and that matters. But removing discriminatory language at the denominational level does not mean LGBTQ+ people are affirmed and celebrated for who they were created to be in every local church. It just means the door isn't locked anymore. It doesn't mean every congregation has decided LGBTQ+ people belong as co-creators of that space, not just guests in it.

That's the difference with a Reconciling congregation. They don't leave it to guesswork. They say clearly, publicly, what they believe about LGBTQ+ people.

Ask your church whether they've done the work, or just the branding.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. For LGBTQ+ people, this is real life, not a statistic on a page.

The Trevor Project's research is clear: LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently at higher risk because of who they are. They're placed at higher risk by rejection, stigma, and the absence of affirming spaces. The same research shows the opposite is just as true โ€” where affirmation exists, so does life.

That's the work RMN exists to do. Every congregation that chooses to see LGBTQ+ people as sacred, as fully made in the image of God โ€” every leader who says "you belong here" and means it โ€” is doing holy work.

This month, we're here to remind you that our work does not stop until every church is a church for every child of God. If you'd like to explore what that looks like in your context, visit rmnetwork.org or email us at [email protected].
