It's ridiculous — and actually sinful — to try to win people to Christ by being like them. "If they see I'm normal. If they see I'm just like them. If they see I'm not weird." God killed His Son so that you and I might be radically different. Blending in isn't an evangelism strategy; it's surrender dressed up as outreach.
So ask it honestly. Do you love the things of the world? Are you separate from it? It's one thing to use the things of this world and another thing entirely to love them. Peter doesn't soften it: "But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in all your conduct." And Paul closes the loophole in 1 Thessalonians — God has not called us for impurity but in sanctification, and the one who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit. Reject the call to holiness and you aren't rejecting a preacher. You're rejecting God.
