STEP 10

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

When we begin to experience success in turning our lives around, we may believe that these accomplishments have resulted from our own human power. The apostle Paul warns against that prideful attitude.

On the other hand, neither should we become hypercritical or over-judgmental when we do make mistakes or slip back into past patterns of behavior. Paul warns us “to think soberly,” which simply means to have sound thinking about ourselves. This is why Step 10 is so important to our spiritual and emotional well-being.

Our daily and weekly inventory is exactly what we need to keep us “thinking soberly.” Have we had success in breaking old dependencies? We should praise God and continue to acknowledge our need of His help. Have we failed in our attempt to handle a problem? We can honestly admit our error and ask God’s help to correct the situation. Our personal inventory helps us remain focused on who we are and the direction God wants for our lives.

STEP 9

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

David was the beloved psalmist and shepherd whom God elevated to king of Israel. One important reason David was able to fellowship so closely with God throughout his life was that he was willing to humble himself before God and others. Humility is an attitude that God has been building in us throughout our recovery program, and it is a key ingredient to the successful completion of Step 9.

David’s words “broken and contrite” are very close in idea to the attitude underlying Step 9. In the same way David asked God to help him “open his lips,” we should depend on God to bring a new power and grace to our lives as we correct past wrongs and achieve healthy ways of relating to the people around us.

As we turn to God for the willingness to make amends, we release ourselves from the power of old resentments, which have held us in bo***ge.

STEP 8

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

How do we love one another as Jesus commands?

It is impossible to give away what we do not possess. If our inventory of past relationships reveals that love was missing, marginal, or intermingled with pain in our earliest childhood experiences, we must grieve that loss and seek new sources of healthy re-parenting. If our inventory of contemporary relationships indicates that we are exploiting or tightly possessing others in order to fill our own emptiness, we must make healing amends in two ways. First, we must acknowledge and apologize for the ways we have hurt others by those patterns. Second, we must set healthy relationship boundaries for ourselves and allow these boundaries to become a form of “living amends.”

The gospel reminds us that we are to be known by our capacity for love. The source of this love is God’s love. As we discover this source of unconditional love, we become more effective in all of our ongoing relationships.

STEP 7

Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.

In John 5:14, the apostle declares we can have great confidence in our prayers “if we ask anything according to [God’s] will.” And no prayer is of greater delight to our Loving Father than a humble believer’s asking Him to do a work of power and grace in his or her life.

We know that Jesus delights in answering this prayer because it is in total alignment with His revealed will for our lives—that we abide in Him and become more Christlike. When His desire for our lives becomes our true longing, Psalm 37:4 will ring true in our lives: “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”

In Step 7, we have turned from trusting in ourselves to trusting and delighting in the power and strength of God alone. This humility opens to us a new door of blessing as the Lord begins to do His wonderful work of grace in our lives.
