CORVALLIS, Ore. – Redemption Church started what Pastor Bryan Bernard calls a Gospel Initiative last September. Since then, 39 people have made professions of faith in Jesus and 17 have been baptized.

The installation of the sign at our new location was completed today. About a thousand Costco shoppers go past this entrance each day. Who knows? We may get some walk-in inquirers about classes and degrees.

Dr. Mike Kuykendall was honored tonight by Gateway Seminary as he retires after 33 1/2 years on the faculty. The clock is his retirement gift. The sculpture is the Michael and Beth Martin Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, given each year to one faculty member on the recommendation and vote of the faculty. Congratulations, Dr. K. You have shaped the Pacific Northwest Campus more than any other person. You will be missed, but your legacy will endure through the preaching, teaching, and character of the hundreds of students you taught and influenced.

This is the first day of classes for Gateway Seminary’s new location of the Pacific Northwest Campus (thanks, Northwest Baptist Convention!). Mike Kuykendall (our revered Dr. K in his final teaching term) has 5 students in the classroom for biblical hermeneutics plus 12 more by remote access via Zoom. The classroom students love the brand new tables and chairs, and the remote students are well served by upgrades to our microphones, a new digital sound mixer, and our new auto-tracking video camera. The last two weeks of moving and setup were hectic, but we’re operational just in time—shaping leaders who expand God’s kingdom around the world.

Today at the NW Baptist Convention we celebrated Dr. Michael Kuykendall’s 33+ years as a professor for Gateway Seminary, primarily at our Pacific NW Campus. We presented him with a gift of a new laptop computer to use for research and writing in retirement, and an MVP award that borrows from baseball terms since he was an outstanding collegiate player.

MDiv student Jason Spurlin—campus pastor at Pathway Church’s Sandy, OR location—preached from the Gospel of Luke today, challenging his congregation to combine proclamation and restoration like Jesus did. Pathway Church is hosting an Angel Tree Christmas party in early December, providing Christmas gifts to children of prisoners in the name of the incarcerated parents.
