Our Lady, Queen of Angels is a beautiful title honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and her close relationship with the Holy Angels, which can be seen throughout her life—from the Annunciation and the birth of Jesus to her Assumption into heaven and Coronation as Queen of Angels and Men. This devotion has a special connection to the city of Los Angeles, whose original name, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles de Porciúncula, means “The Town of Our Lady of the Angels of Porciúncula.” The name traces back to the Porciúncula, a small chapel in Assisi dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels that later became closely associated with St. Francis of Assisi. Tradition tells of angels being heard singing there, and the chapel also became connected with the famous Porciúncula Indulgence, celebrated on August 2, the feast of Our Lady of the Angels. Churches and shrines around the world continue to honor Mary under this ancient title, reminding the faithful of her special place in heaven as the Mother of Christ and Queen among the angels and saints.

Pope Saint Gregory the Great was born in Rome around the year 540 and became one of the most influential popes and saints in Church history. After serving in public office, he left behind a life of wealth and privilege to become a monk and dedicate himself to prayer and service to God. He was elected pope in 590 and became known for his humility, care for the poor, missionary work, and strong leadership during difficult times. Gregory helped strengthen the Church, encouraged the spread of Christianity throughout Europe, and sent missionaries, including Saint Augustine of Canterbury, to evangelize England. He also contributed greatly to Catholic worship and teaching and is traditionally associated with the development of Gregorian chant. Because of his important writings and lasting influence on the Church, he is honored as one of the four great Doctors of the Western Church. Pope Saint Gregory the Great died in 604, and his feast day is celebrated on September 3.

The Passion of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on August 29, honors the martyrdom of the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ. John boldly spoke the truth and condemned King Herod Antipas for unlawfully marrying Herodias, the wife of his brother, which led to John being imprisoned. During a banquet, Herodias’s daughter danced for Herod, and he promised to give her whatever she asked. At her mother’s urging, she requested the head of John the Baptist. Although Herod was distressed, he ordered John to be beheaded because of the promise he had made before his guests. Saint John remained faithful to God and courageous in proclaiming the truth even when it cost him his life. His martyrdom reminds Christians of the importance of standing firm in their faith and remaining faithful to God despite opposition or sacrifice.

Saint Augustine of Hippo was one of the most influential saints and theologians in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in North Africa in 354, Augustine spent much of his youth searching for meaning and living a life far from the Christian faith, despite the constant prayers of his mother, Saint Monica. After years of spiritual struggle, he experienced a powerful conversion and was baptized by Saint Ambrose in 387. Augustine later became a priest and then Bishop of Hippo, dedicating his life to teaching, preaching, and defending the Christian faith. His writings, especially Confessions and The City of God, continue to shape Christian thought today. Saint Augustine died in 430 and was later named a Doctor of the Church. His life is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond God's grace and that a restless heart ultimately finds its peace in Him.

St. Monica was a devoted Christian mother best known for her strong faith, patience, and many years of prayer for her son, St. Augustine. Born in North Africa around 331, Monica was married to a man who did not share her Christian faith and often had a difficult temper. Through her kindness, perseverance, and example, he eventually converted to Christianity. Monica also prayed faithfully for Augustine, who spent many years living far from the Christian faith. She never gave up hope, and eventually witnessed his conversion and baptism before her death in 387. St. Monica is remembered as a powerful example of trusting in God and remaining faithful in prayer, especially when praying for loved ones who have fallen away from their faith. She is the patron saint of mothers, wives, and those praying for the conversion of family members.

St. Bartholomew, whose feast day is celebrated on August 24, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus and is traditionally identified with Nathanael in the Gospel of John. When Philip first told him about Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael questioned, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” but still went to meet Jesus for himself. Jesus praised him as an honest man “in whom there is no guile,” and their encounter led Nathanael to proclaim Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel. Although the Gospels tell us little about the rest of his life, tradition holds that Bartholomew went on to spread the Gospel and eventually died as a martyr for his faith. His story reminds Christians of the importance of honesty, openness, and being willing to follow Christ when we encounter the truth.
