In most dioceses of the United States, the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi this year on Sunday, June 7, following the traditional rhythm of the calendar shortly after Trinity Sunday.

The feast, instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV, highlights the Church’s faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. “Corpus Christi” is Latin for “Body of Christ,” drawing our attention to Christ truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.

Throughout history, deep devotion to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament has marked the lives of the saints; by following their example, we too can grow in love for Jesus present in the Eucharist and strengthen our friendship with him through his Body and Blood.

Today, the Church remembers the martyrs Saints Marcellinus and Peter.

Marcellinus was born a Roman citizen. He became a priest in Rome and was noted for his piety. He was martyred in the persecutions of Diocletian, the last and most severe of the persecutions, dying in 304.

Peter the Exorcist and Deacon was also born a Roman citizen. Also known for his piety, he served as exorcist in Rome. He also helped convert several Roman saints. Peter was martyred along with Marcellinus.

The Emperor Constantine built a basilica over their tomb. Pope Damasus’ account of their deaths says they were martyred in the woods outside Rome so that the faithful wouldn’t know and venerate them. They were beheaded in the spot they themselves cleared in the woods.

Today, the Church East and West celebrates the Memorial of St. Justin, the Martyr.

Born around the year 100 in Palestine, Justin was a pagan philosopher. He was converted by reading the Sacred Scriptures and witnessing the heroism and faith of martyrs. He used his philosophical and oratorical skills to dispute with pagans and explain the faith. From these and other writings and orations, he won the attention of the authorities and suffered martyrdom by being beheaded at age sixty-five in Rome. He is the patron saint for apologists, orators, and philosophers.

Today, the Church remembers St. Augustine of Canterbury.

Born in Rome in the 6th Century, Augustine professed as a monk and was elected abbot. Pope St. Gregory the Great sent Abbot Augustine and forty monks to evangelize the British Isles around 600 AD. Before reaching the islands, he heard terrifying tales of the Celts, which sent him back to Rome in fear. But the Holy Father told him he had no choice, so he went.

Abbot Augustine established and helped spread the Christian faith throughout England. One of his earliest converts was the king, who brought ten thousand of his people with him. Augustine was ordained a bishop, and as such, helped re-establish contact between the Celtic and Latin Churches. Bishop Augustine died on this date. He is the patron saint of England.
