In the process of discernment, we consider our gifts and talents, humbly reflect upon what is needed to build the kingdom of God, and listen carefully in prayer to the voice of God.
⁣
We have the immense gifts of Sacred Tradition and Scripture to facilitate the “renewal of [the] mind” (Rom 12:2) as we allow our minds and hearts to be transformed by God’s will. And in humble obedience, we must be honest with ourselves about whether we are fully open to God’s call, even when it is contrary to our plans.
⁣
When we believe with our entire being that we are living according to God’s will, we will not be able to remain quiet or live in a mediocre way.
⁣
Just as Jeremiah was unable to keep himself from speaking on the Lord’s behalf, the Good News of Christ will come pouring forth from our being in everything that we do. And in this outpouring of God’s love, we will give others the opportunity to encounter Christ through us.

Each year on August 27, the Church remembers St. Monica.

Born in 322 in today’s Algeria, Monica was raised Christian. She was the wife of a man who was mean, an adulterer, and didn’t believe in God. She was the mother of a man who didn’t go to Church, didn’t believe in God, and lived a very immoral lifestyle. But Monica loved God and loved her family. So, she prayed for her husband, and a year before he died, he was baptized and became a Christian. And she prayed for her son for fifteen years, living long enough to see him baptized. His Memorial is tomorrow.

St. Monica is the patroness of wives and mothers. Because of her faithfulness in praying for her husband and son to turn to Christ, she has become the de facto intercessor for those whose loved ones do not believe in Christ and do not practice their faith.

St. Monica, pray for us!

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Bartholomew, also known as St. Nathanael.

Born in Galilee, Bartholomew was one of the Twelve. He was very likely a close friend of St. Philip, who brought Bartholomew to Christ. He wrote a gospel account of Jesus, as evidenced in other writings of the time, but it is now lost to history. Bartholomew preached in Asia Minor, Ethiopia, India, and Armenia. He won the crown of martyrdom by being flayed alive in Armenia. He is the patron saint against nervous diseases, and for bookbinders, butchers, leather workers, and shoemakers.

Today’s Gospel demonstrates that Christ desired to place Peter – and his successors – as the visible head of his Church. Y

es, God willed from the beginning to leave his Church with a leader who could safeguard the quintessential confession of Christ as the “Son of the living God,” but there’s more to it than this. Peter is given keys to the kingdom of heaven.
⁣
And what are keys for if not to open doors? In a very real way, the mission of our Holy Father is to open up access to God’s kingdom, and there are many examples of this.
⁣
On World Mission Sunday in 2011, Pope Benedict said, “The proclamation of the Gospel is intended for all peoples.” And Pope Francis, speaking at World Youth Day in 2023, emphasized that the Gospel is for todos, todos, todos – everyone, everyone, everyone, without exception.
⁣
As we pray for our Holy Father and the immense task with which he has been entrusted, let us work in our own way to ensure that the doors of our churches, the way to the kingdom of heaven, remain open for all.

On August 20 each year, the Church celebrates St. Bernard of Clairvaux, also known as the Mellifluous Doctor or the Honey-sweet-voiced Doctor of the Church and the last of the Church Fathers.

Bernard was born in 1090 in France to a noble family. His brother is St. Humbeline. At age twenty-two, fearing the ways of the world, he, four of his brothers, and twenty-five friends joined the Benedictine abbey. Bernard’s father and another brother came soon after.

Brother Bernard founded and was the abbot of the monastery of Clairvaux, which had more than seven hundred monks and eventually one hundred sixty daughter houses. Abbot Bernard reformed the Cistercian monks and western monasticism. As the best-known European of that century, Abbot Bernard counseled popes, bishops, and kings. As a teacher of the faith, he fought the heresy of Albigensianism, which erroneously taught that there are two equal and opposite forces, one for good and one for evil. He preached in France, Italy, and Germany, wrote many letters, books, treatises, sermons, and a study of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Abbot Bernard died on this date in 1153 at Clairvaux Abbey. He is the patron saint of beekeepers, candlemakers, and the Cistercians.
