Washington Memorial Chapel at Valley Forge

Washington Memorial Chapel at Valley Forge The Episcopal Church in Valley Forge Park, and a living memorial to George Washington and the Continental Army.

Built in 1903 as a wayside chapel for prayer and reflection for those who visit Valley Forge, the Chapel is a vibrant home for a faithful congregation of the Episcopal Church, part of the Diocese of Pennsylvania. Each year its Gothic Revival architecture, stained glass windows and interior furnishings, coupled with its congregation’s religious and patriotic mission, continue to attract and inspire many thousands of visitors.

As we take time today to appreciate the contributions of American workers all over our country, here are a couple of prayers that always remind me of the importance of our labor for the common good. I am always particularly struck by the request, "may we never forget that our common life depends upon each other's toil."

The first is a prayer we offer in Compline (prayers before sleep)

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live: Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other's toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And the other is the prayer set aside for Labor Day:

Almighty God, who hast so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day!
Fr. Tommy
