And, because church life is not just about beautiful preaching from the 6th century or so, I include Pope Francis' words on Christmas eve. These have contemporary bite and challenge -- just like the Gospel.

That night, the One who had no place to be born is proclaimed to those who had no place at the table or in the streets of the city. The shepherds are the first to hear this Good News. By reason of their work, they were men and women forced to live on the edges of society. Their state of life, and the places they had to stay, prevented them from observing all the ritual prescriptions of religious purification; as a result, they were considered unclean. Their skin, their clothing, their smell, their way of speaking, their origin, all betrayed them. Everything about them generated mistrust. They were men and women to be kept at a distance, to be feared. They were considered pagans among the believers, sinners among the just, foreigners among the citizens. Yet to them – pagans, sinners and foreigners – the angel says: “Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord” (Lk 2:10-11).

This is the joy that we tonight are called to share, to celebrate and to proclaim. The joy with which God, in his infinite mercy, has embraced us pagans, sinners and foreigners, and demands that we do the same.

The faith we proclaim tonight makes us see God present in all those situations where we think he is absent. He is present in the unwelcomed visitor, often unrecognizable, who walks through our cities and our neighbourhoods, who travels on our buses and knocks on our doors.

This same faith impels us to make space for a new social imagination, and not to be afraid of experiencing new forms of relationship, in which none have to feel that there is no room for them on this earth.

Moved by the joy of the gift, little Child of Bethlehem, we ask that your crying may shake us from our indifference and open our eyes to those who are suffering. May your tenderness awaken our sensitivity and recognize our call to see you in all those who arrive in our cities, in our histories, in our lives. May your revolutionary tenderness persuade us to feel our call to be agents of the hope and tenderness of our people.

To start, I share an ancient homily from one of my favorite bishops who on seeing the horrors of dealing with people, retired to the desert, Isaac the Syrian. His teaching has the flavor of the transformation that the incarnation makes possible.
This Christmas night bestowed peace on the whole world;
So let no one threaten;
This is the night of the Most Gentle One -
Let no one be cruel;
This is the night of the Humble One -
Let no one be proud.
Now is the day of joy -
Let us not revenge;
Now is the day of Good Will -
Let us not be mean.
In this Day of Peace -
Let us not be conquered by anger.
Today the Bountiful impoverished Himself for our sake;
So, rich one, invite the poor to your table.
Today we receive a Gift for which we did not ask;
So let us give alms to those who implore and beg us.
This present Day cast open the heavenly doors to our prayers;
Let us open our door to those who ask our forgiveness.
Today the DIVINE BEING took upon Himself the seal of our humanity,
In order for humanity to be decorated by the Seal of DIVINITY.

Sisters and brothers -- I acknowledge that I have been grossly remiss in posting here. Today until I leave this country for Nepal likely in April 2018, I commit to posting once a week and welcoming conversation here.

Friends -- For Lent 2017, what better to say than to repeat what Pope Francis has already said so very well:
"Lent is a time for saying no: no to “spiritual asphyxia” caused by indifference; no to “the toxic pollution of empty and meaningless words”; no to “a prayer that soothes our conscience, an almsgiving that leaves us self-satisfied, a fasting that makes us feel good”, no to all forms of exclusion.”
The Lenten Spring has come! Let us rejoice!

Today would have been Bishop Gus' 60th birthday. He has however been moved into the next life, the next way of being with God. May his memory especially his dedication to justice be a blessing and an inspiration to us all! May his partner Jake and all his friends be comforted.

After the recent death of Bishop Gus who pastored the church of St. Albert the Great in San Pablo, Bishop Paul met with the parishioners and discerned that it is time to close the parish. Current and past members agree and the final Eucharist is tentatively scheduled for Sunday July 24 at 11 am. We will give thanks for all the life and worship and prayer that has happened in that congregation for many years and will bless the people for their new lives. All are welcome to join in the closing Eucharist of thanksgiving and empowerment. Father Mark Lodico, Communications Director

Death of Bishop Gus Thompson

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the death of Bishop Gus Thompson. Bishop Gus died just before 4 o'clock this morning.

Bishop Gus has been fighting bone marrow cancer for the better part of a year. In the last several days he was admitted to Kaiser Oakland Medical Center with a pneumonia that he was unable to overcome.

Bishop Gus was, among other things, the First Auxiliary Bishop of The Diocese of the Transfiguration having been elected by the people of this diocese and then receiving a mandate from the Synod of Bishops on April 30, 2014. Bishop Gus was consecrated and ordained a bishop on August 23, 2014, at St. Victor Old Catholic Church in Vallejo, California.

Bishop Gus completed his doctoral studies in nursing at the University of San Francisco and was to graduate on May 19, 2016. Bishop Gus was the dean of St. Albert's Parish in Richmond, California. Bishop Gus had a heart and passion for advocating for the under-privileged, the worker, and those who were hungry.

More information will be published as it becomes available.

Please pray for the soul Bishop Gus Thompson
