This famous journal entry was written by John Wesley, the English theologian and co-founder of the Methodist movement. Wesley wrote these words aboard a ship returning to Great Britain after a deeply discouraging and failed missionary voyage to the colony of Georgia. The quote reflects a profound spiritual crisis; while he had set out to evangelize Native Americans, the journey forced him to confront his own lack of personal assurance and faith. Shortly after writing this, Wesley's spiritual crisis was resolved on May 24, 1738, during a meeting on Aldersgate Street in London. While listening to a reading of Martin Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans, Wesley experienced his famous evangelical conversion, noting that he felt his "heart strangely warmed".

Elizabeth "Betsy" Ritchie was one of the most prominent, spiritual women in early Methodism. Wesley trusted her deeply, corresponding with her frequently and relying on her as his nurse during his final days. When Wesley noted in a letter written to her on November 12, 1776, "A friend is made for adversity," he was directly paraphrasing Proverbs 17:17. The verse traditionally reads, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Wesley's words emphasize that true friendship requires absolute vulnerability without pretense. While companionship is valuable during peaceful times, its ultimate testing ground and highest utility appear during times of temptation and personal trial.

where the naked are clothed in robes of hope;
where the stranger is embraced as the long-lost prodigal.

where the imprisoned model justice,
where the sick are cradled in God's peace.
