Update from Sarah Wilson and John T Wilson. Praise God for this miracle!
Update! Wilson just came out of the OR from having his chest closed.
His heart is doing great and supporting his body. The pressures from the heart were a little higher once they closed the chest but they believe it will work itself out as swelling goes down.
Yesterday they weaned his ECMO support, performing a "clamp trial" and his lungs were able to fully support him, along with the vent, but he was able to breathe with his new lungs without any help!
In a turn of events, the VV ECMO they thought they would need for a little after chest closure is not needed and he is off anticoagulation and off any extracoporal support! T
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME JUST ONE MONTH SHY OF 2 YEARS THAT HE WILL NOT BE ON A LIFE GIVING MACHINE!
It is bittersweet and hard for us to fathom that we will not have a "BOB" in the room, more hard to grasp is that we will not have our beloved ECMO staff in the room with us 24/7.
I never thought I would miss someone in our every day, but now we are having a hard time imagining our extra family members not being in the room with us everyday. Wilson is going to wake up without his people and it will no doubt be an adjustment.
I can't say enough about our ECMO friends, they have been through so much with us and they will forever be a huge part of our story and Wilson's story.
I never thought we would be grieving our past life tethered to a machine, but I guess loss comes with a little sadness.
However, we are so excited for our new chapter and the following weeks as we wean vent support, pull chest tubes, and come off sedation. It's time to wake up Wilson to your new life!
GOODBYE BOB!
