In Luke 11, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray, “Give us each day our daily bread.” Shortly after, Jesus tells a parable about a traveler arriving at midnight. A man goes to his friend asking for bread so he can care for the weary traveler. Though it is late, the door is opened and the bread is given. Jesus continues, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Then Jesus says something remarkable: “What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent…or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?” Earthly fathers, though imperfect, still desire to care for their children. “How much more,” Jesus says, “will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13 ESV)
Our Father delights in giving good gifts to His children. He provides daily bread for our bodies, forgiveness for our sins, and through the Holy Spirit He provides what we need for faithful living. If we ask for more patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, grace, or love, God does not mock us or turn us away. Through His Spirit, He works these fruits within us.
Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians, “Do not quench the Spirit.” Sometimes we resist what the Spirit is producing in us. We hold onto bitterness instead of forgiveness. We withhold patience from the person getting on our last nerve. We choose harshness instead of gentleness. But the Spirit desires to produce good fruit in us—not fruit that rots on the vine, but fruit that is shared freely with others.
Today, breathe deeply of what God desires to give. The Holy Spirit is still at work. He strengthens weary hearts, softens hardened ones, produces faithfulness, and equips us to love others even when it is difficult. Our Father knows exactly what His children need, and He delights in pouring out His Spirit upon His people.
May God pour out His Holy Spirit upon us, that our lives would reflect His goodness, His grace, and His faithfulness each day.
