I typically don’t make posts like this, but those who know me know how passionate I am about supporting local children and families in need. Over the years, I’ve done a tremendous amount of business with local Kroger stores—purchasing school supplies, gift cards, and essential items. I routinely check the manager’s clearance section to find bargains so I can stretch every dollar for families who need it most.
Today, while in the store, staff began marking certain seasonal items down to 80% off. Given everything on my plate recently, finding these items at such a deep discount felt like a true blessing.
However, while placing items in my cart, I overheard a male manager telling an employee, "We just marked those down, he can't buy them all, what about other shoppers?" Shortly after, a second manager approached, visibly angry and upset.
To be clear:
No limits were posted: There was no per-customer purchase limit on these clearance items, and plenty of stock remained on the shelves for others.
No "inside edge": I was accused of having inside information or "first dibs." That is completely false. I simply shop these locations frequently enough to understand their standard markdown schedules.
Unacceptable treatment: When I went to customer service because items weren't scanning correctly, I had to endure managers talking about me as if I weren't standing right there, yelling, being completely dismissive, and pointing fingers in my face.
If a store marks down seasonal inventory and a customer has the means to purchase it, no policy is being broken. If management suspects an internal leak or is unhappy with inventory moving quickly, that is an internal personnel issue—not an excuse to publicly berate and disrespect a loyal customer.
I had to tell myself: "Ty, stay calm. It’s not about you, it’s about the children."
This is the second year in a row I’ve experienced this type of disrespect from Kroger staff across different locations. I didn't deserve to be treated this way, but I chose to hold my peace and remain grounded.
I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for fairness, professionalism, respect, and accountability‼️
