Topic: The Power of Obedience
James 1:22-25
Obedience is a key factor of Christianity. There are those who hear the Word and those who hear the Word and do exactly what it says. Romans 10:17 - Hearing, alone, is not the end of our experience with God. We must hear and do. We can mistake knowing the truth instead of living the truth.
1. Obedience demonstrates our love for God (John 14:15, 1 John 5:3). Our lifestyle should exemplify our obedience to God. Our relationship with God goes beyond a list of rules and liberties. Biblical obedience is rooted in relationship meaning we cannot separate our love for God and fail to adhere to the Word of God. It is not about what feels comfortable to us. Obedience is not meant to be a burden, it is the response of us recognizing the One we serve.
2. Obedience positions us for God’s blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1-2). If we desire to fulfill purpose, we must obey the Word of God.
3. Obedience leads us into God’s purpose for our lives (Ephesians 2:8-10, Exodus 3:11-12). Our lives in Christ have purpose! God’s mercy saved us by grace and that grace gives us purpose to serve God! We all have work to do, but we must be willing to follow Him! God calls people who recognize their own limitations and gives them to God.
4. Obedience produces spiritual maturity in us (James 1:22-25, Hebrews 5:8). The Word of God is our mirror. Looking in the mirror should cause us to change those things that are not pleasing to God. Knowledge (alone) does not make one spiritually mature. Knowing the truth and not applying it to our lives is living in error. Obedience can be learned by suffering. We are not exempt from opposition because Christ had to suffer to accomplish the will that God placed on His life.
Obedience costs us! We must obey God’s commands.
