https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKzO03Ytz2MIn II Corinthians 8:1–9, Paul points to the Macedonian churches as an example of extraordinary generosity. Despite experiencing severe trials and deep poverty, they gave joyfully and willingly, not because they had plenty, but because their hearts were full of grace. They understood that generosity is not measured by how much we have, but by the willingness of our hearts to give. Paul then points to the ultimate example of generosity—Jesus Christ, who, though He was rich, became poor for our sake so that through His poverty we might become rich. The genius of generosity is that when we truly understand the grace we have received from Christ, we become eager to extend that grace to others.

Since grace is the unmerited favor of God any attempt on our part to add merit effectively eliminates the "un" and makes it merited which is not grace at all.

Grace isn't fair. Jesus received what he didn't deserve so we could receive what we don't deserve.
