The image is “Harvest,” a painting by Auguste LePrince.

“Friday this week (the 19th) will be the birthday of Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher, mathematician, and physicist, born in 1623. He invented the syringe and the hydraulic press, among other things. His family was not particularly religious, but after two Christian mystics helped care for his father during an illness, Blaise became a Christian. He wrote a book called Thoughts or Sentences which is filled with insights. For example, he wrote that if you don’t have faith, try acting as though you do. Do the things that a faithful person would do, and over time, you may well find your actions leading your heart and mind in faithful directions. In other words, don’t worry too much about what you believe; focus instead on your actions, on how you are living, and in time, your convictions will follow. Liturgical scholars would later state this as lex orandi, lex credenda, “the way of praying shapes the way of believing.” Join us on Sunday when will contemplate, with the help of the Gospel of Matthew, the call of the first disciples. Just like us, we will see that they learned on the job.”

The image is “Sarah and Abraham Offer Hospitality to God’s Messengers,” a mosaic in the church of San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy.

“Super abundance. That’s the nature of God’s grace. Plenitude is another good word. My favorite word in Greek for this is pleroma (πλήρωμα). It means “fullness,” but evokes so much more than that. Pleroma is used, for example, to describe how the fullness of Christ is shared with the Church, filling the Church like the sweet smell of incense. Any grace we embody, any hospitality we are able to show, flows from this extravagant fullness of God. Join us on Sunday when we will contemplate together two foundational passages of scripture which describe the calling of Abram and Matthew. We will see all over again what the fullness of God’s grace can do.”

Trinity Sunday, May 31, 2026

The image is “Creation,” Genesis frontispiece, an illumination created by calligrapher Donald Jackson in 2003 for The Saint John’s Bible.

“Words cannot say everything that needs to be said. Language alone cannot capture some mysteries. Art exists and is created to express what language cannot. Medieval Christians knew this about art and that is one reason why they loved illuminated manuscripts. The Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells are masterpieces of rich material cultures and fecund imaginations. That The Saint John’s Bible is the first hand-written and hand-illuminated Bible in 500 years says something about the state of modern culture and imagination. That is why the Benedictine Abbey at Saint John’s Abbey in Minnesota commissioned this contemporary masterpiece. Join us on Sunday as we hear the opening poetry of the Book of Genesis and as we reflect together on the meaning of creation and our place within it.”

Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2026

The image is “Pentecost,” a display of paper cranes in the First Presbyterian Church, Berkeley, California.

“I hope you will remember to wear red, the more flamboyant the better, on this coming Sunday when we will celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Lenten and Eastertide journey is unlike any other in the human experience. We move on Ash Wednesday from ashes to the fire of Pentecost. That’s not the only reversal we celebrate. We also celebrate how the division of the Tower of Babel is overcome by the unifying embrace of the Holy Spirit. It’s not the case that all languages suddenly become one language and everyone now has to speak that one language. No. The Holy Spirit enables people of all languages to understand each other. God loves diversity and does not impose uniformity. One more gift we celebrate is conveyed by the image from our siblings in faith in Berkeley. The gift of the Holy Spirit brings peace. So join us on Sunday as we celebrate and sing and thank God together.”

The image is “Ascension,” a painting in the Keur Moussa Abbey, Keur Moussa, Senegal.

“I don’t know if I will ever make it back to Africa, but if I do, I will, of course, want to visit our friends in Domasi, Malawi. It’s been 8 years sine we last visited them. I must also say that I long to visit Senegal in West Africa, especially Dakar on the coast and Keur Moussa, just to the east of Dakar. I would love to see this monastery. Perhaps better than any other depiction of the account of the Ascension in the Book of Acts, this three-panel image captures some of the humor I think Luke (the writer of Acts) intended. The disciples are all looking up as Jesus rises. Then there are the two in white who are looking at the disciples asking, “What are you looking at?!” Join us on Sunday as we contemplate this wonderfully human story together and as we consider why this scene is funny.”

Only two more weeks until the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. As the season of Eastertide comes to a conclusion, we will get a preview of the powerful gifts of the Spirit this Sunday. All Eastertide, we’ve been hearing stories from the Book of Acts, and on Sunday we will hear about the Apostle Paul’s visit to Athens. How does he preach? Does he condemn the pagans and tell them they are all going to burn in hell if they do not repent? Of course not! He is filled with the Holy Spirit. So ,he preaches with gentleness, wit, and respect. Join us on Sunday as we contemplate this beautiful passage of scripture and find inspiration for living life in the light of the Resurrection in our time.

The image is “Abraham in Heaven, holding the soul of Lazarus,” a bas-relief in the Abbey of St. Pierre, Moissac, France.

“Life lived in the light of the resurrection does not entail a life of one spiritual victory after another, contrary to what any prosperity gospel preacher might declare. As we will hear in the Gospel of John on Sunday, Jesus strives to comfort his disciples in their realization that they will lose him. “Where I go, you cannot come,” Jesus said. What would they do without him? Jesus promises them that the Holy Spirit will come and that they would do even greater things in the days ahead. Think about it this way. When we dissolve a tablet in water, we lose the tablet, true, but the medicine in the tablet now pervades the water. Just so, the presence and the peace of Christ will pervade the disciples, and they will go on to do amazing ministry in his name. Join us on Sunday as we contemplate the passages from John and the Acts of the Apostles and hear a good word for our troubled times.”

There will be scripture present during worship on Sunday, but not read. Instead, we will hear it sung, in the hymns and in Fauré’s Requiem. This beautiful and deeply moving piece of music resonates well with Psalm 23 and John 10, two passages that would have been read if this were not a special music Sunday. Those two passages of scripture and the music we will hear proclaim peace, peace for those who need it and the peace we all can know in God’s presence. Join us for worship on Sunday to hear much good news about God’s peace.

“One common element in the post-Resurrection stories in the Gospels is the disciples’ inability to recognize Jesus. We will encounter another example in the Gospel of Luke on Sunday. The stories make clear that things were different after the Resurrection. Jesus was still Jesus, but he was not the same. Join us on Sunday as we contemplate the beloved passage from Luke 24. Jesus had changed. What these stories show us is Jesus helping the disciples to change.”
