Today we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In other words... Happy Birthday to the the Mother of God!

In reflecting on the fact that the Bible tells us very little about Mary's childhood, Pope Leo says, "we celebrate the birth of a little girl destined to become the Mother of her Creator, the Mother of God who saves us. Yet, she was simply born, like the daughters and granddaughters we hold in our arms."

Mary was not born into grandeur, and yet she becomes for us the model of faith.

Even in the worst of disagreements, Jesus told us to treat our brothers and sisters like a Gentile or tax collector. But he also demonstrated kindness, love, forgiveness, and charity to the Gentiles and tax collectors.

Today we remember Mother Teresa. Her work to care for the poor remains legendary, especially her willingness to provide space for the dying when hospitals could not or would not care for them.

She also struggled with her own faith at times showing us that even legends of the faith can have periods of darkness.

If you have your own struggles, take solace! You are in good company.

Today we remember St. Gregory the Great, most widely remembered for his association with Gregorian Chant.

But he was also a champion of the poor. During his lifetime Rome was devastated by war, plague, famine, and widespread poverty. While pope, he invited the poor to dine at his table with him and treated the Church's wealth as property entrusted to the Church for the care of the poor.

In our own time of instability, perhaps St. Gregory's example can help us love those in need.
