First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro

First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro Sunday School: 9am
Sunday Service: 10am
Wed. Night Awana & Adult Bible Study: 6:30pm (except 1st Wed) A lot has happened in that time for which we thank God.

In the spring of 1959, an adult Sunday School teacher at the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church felt the Lord leading him to establish a Baptist ministry in the Upper Marlboro area. Working through the Department of Missions and Evangelism of the DC Baptist Convention, he held the first service in the Masonic Lodge on May 24, 1959. The chapel was constituted as the First Baptist Church of Upper Ma

rlboro on March 17, 1963. For 55 years, the First Baptist Church of Upper Marlboro has shared the good news of Jesus Christ in the Upper Marlboro community and neighboring counties. In November 2005, we moved to our new location on Rt. 301 South and continue to shine the light of the gospel in this community and worldwide. We are “A Community lifting up Christ by Gathering, Growing and Going.”:

Gathering weekly in Corporate Worship
Growing through participation in DiscipleLIFE (Sunday School) & LifeGroups (small groups)
Going by serving in the ministries of the church

Many visiting our church say one thing repeatedly – they love the feeling of a loving family when they spend time with us. Our church family loves meeting new people and helping them find a place in our community! At FBC Upper Marlboro, everyone means so much to us, regardless of age, ethnicity, nationality, background, or story. We reflect the tapestry of God’s image bearers, and it’s exciting to see all of us come together under one name, Jesus Christ.

Can you imagine what it would be like if you had Jesus over for dinner tonight? What meal would you prepare? How would you feel sitting across the table from the King of kings? What would it be like?

Every letter to each church has something to say to our church. As we read them, we should examine ourselves. If we share a sin that Jesus critiques one of the churches about, we should repent. And if we share something good that He commends and praises a certain church about, we should be grateful. We should be encouraged. This seventh letter is particularly relevant to the American church today. It describes a church whose wealth and prosperity left them spiritually indifferent. Jesus had a word for them.

We live in a performance-based value system. Envy often motivates us as we labor for success and achievement. We anxiously work every day to do things to make our life comfortable, thinking that doing this is what is important. In the end, all of it will be left behind. (Ecclesiastes 5:15) A wise person learns this and lives by a different value system. A wise person lives by God’s standard. In doing so, we are swimming upstream - against the current of the world. That can be hard, discouraging, and even dangerous. How can we persevere and make it across the finish line of faith? Rejoice that you belong to God! Hold fast to your confession of hope.

What would make you happy? Circumstances in this life are never perfect. God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in God. We were meant to spread the Gospel. The joyful confidence of a Christian is that the Gospel will be advanced through any adversity or any adversary.

How can a nominal, lifeless church or a nominal Christian be turned into a vibrant living church or a vibrant living Christian? May we seek to be honest about the problem, rely on Christ, and exchange the counterfeit for the truth!
