We’ve had quite a few people asking about the TN Folk Magic Festival, so we wanted to officially let everyone know that there will not be a festival this year.

As many of you know, there was a fire at our studio and offices down the street from aromaG’s earlier this summer. While the fire itself wasn’t in our space, the resulting water damage forced us to temporarily move a good portion of our production into the store and take over several rooms just to keep things going.

We just got new units for the studio and offices within the past 24 hours, which is wonderful news—but now comes the job of moving everything back, rebuilding our workspaces, and getting our normal operations settled again.

With all of that happening, there simply isn’t enough time to put together the kind of TN Folk Magic Festival we’d want to hold. Rather than rush it or do a watered-down version, we’ve decided to cancel this year’s event.

We know some of you look forward to it every year, and we’re sorry we won’t all be gathering together this time around. We do hope to schedule some sort of special event within the next couple of months to make it up to you, and we’ll share details as soon as we have them.

Thank you for understanding—and especially for all the kindness and support you’ve shown us through what has been a very challenging and stressful summer. - aromaG’s Botanica

I have started making these shadowbox altars. Will probably do a lot with Mary, maybe some Expedite - but I wanted to do this Marie Laveau one for myself. What kind would you like to see?

🏵️Practicing Buddhism at home does not require rituals or formal conversion. It is primarily a way of training the mind and living ethically. A simple, structured approach is effective.

1. Establish daily mindfulness
Set aside 5–20 minutes daily for meditation.
Sit quietly, keep the spine upright, and observe the breath.
When the mind wanders, note it and return to breathing. This develops awareness and calm (samatha) and insight (vipassanā).

2. Observe basic ethical conduct (sīla)
Avoid harming living beings.
Avoid stealing, lying, and harmful speech.
Avoid actions driven by greed, hatred, or delusion. Ethics stabilizes the mind and reduces inner conflict.

3. Cultivate wholesome mental states
Practice mettā (loving-kindness) by wishing well-being to yourself and others.
Notice anger, craving, and fear as passing mental states rather than “self.” This weakens reactivity.

4. Reflect on core teachings
Regularly contemplate:
Impermanence (anicca)
Unsatisfactoriness of clinging (dukkha)
Non-self (anattā) Short reflection is more useful than memorizing many texts.

5. Study a small amount consistently
Read short suttas (e.g., Dhammapada, Metta Sutta).
Listen to talks from reliable Theravāda or Zen teachers. Consistency matters more than volume.

6. Create a simple supportive space (optional)
A quiet corner with a candle or image of the Buddha can help focus.
This is a support, not a requirement.

7. Bring practice into daily life
Be mindful while walking, eating, speaking, and working.
Observe how attachment and aversion arise in ordinary situations. This is where insight matures.

8. Practice patience and self-compassion
Progress is gradual. The path is about understanding suffering, not forcing peace.
