Introduction
The City of Thessalonica

The city of Thessalonica flourished for hundreds of years, partly because of its ideal location. It was situated on the banks of a hospitable harbor in the Thermaic Gulf near the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea. In the Apostle Paul’s day it was the chief seaport of the Roman province of Macedonia. Thessalonica ranked with Corinth and Ephesus, the main ports of the provinces of Achaia and Asia, as a great shipping center.

Thessalonica also enjoyed another advantage. The Egnatian Way, the main Roman road from Rome to the Orient via Byzantium (modern Istanbul), passed through the city. This put Thessalonica in direct contact with many other important cities by land as well as by sea. It was one of the most important centers of population in Paul’s day, occupying a strategic location both governmentally and militarily.

Estimates of the population of Thessalonica in New Testament times place it at near 200,000 (Everett F. Harrison, Introduction to the New Testament, Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1964, p. 245). Most of the inhabitants were native Greeks, but many Romans also lived there. Orientals and Jews likewise populated the city. Wherever commerce flourished in the ancient world one would find Jewish businessmen. The Jewish synagogue in Thessalonica was influential; many Greek proselytes were present when Paul preached there Act17:4.

First Thessalonians reflects the moral climate of the city. The pagan Greek religion of the largest segment of the population produced many forms of immorality but whetted the appetites of some for spiritual reality. Evidently the higher standards of Judaism attracted disillusioned Greeks, Romans, and Orientals to the synagogue.

Thessalonica was built by Cassander in 315 b.c. near the site of an ancient city called Therma, named for the hot springs in the area. He chose this place for its excellent location and named it after his wife, Thessalonica, who was a half sister of Alexander the Great. Cassander was a Greek general under Alexander.

Many years later, when the Romans conquered the area (168 b.c.), they divided Macedonia into four districts and named Thessalonica the capital of one of these. In 146 b.c. the Romans reorganized Macedonia and made Thessalonica the capital of the new province which encompassed all four of the older districts. In 42 b.c. Thessalonica received the status of a free city from Anthony and Octavian (later called Caesar Augustus) because the Thessalonians had helped these men defeat their adversaries, Brutus and Cassius. The Romans ruled Thessalonica with a loose hand; though the Roman proconsul (or governor) lived there, no Roman troops were garrisoned in the city. The citizens were allowed to govern themselves, as in a Greek city-state, which they did through a group of five or six politarchs, a senate, and a public assembly.

In World War I the Allies based soldiers in Thessalonica, and during the Second World War the N***s extracted 60,000 Jews from the city and executed them. Thessalonica still exists today with a population near 300,000. It is called Salonica (or Thessaloniki).

The Evangelization of the City

The Apostle Paul first preached the gospel in Thessalonica during his second missionary journey. Having revisited the churches in the province of Asia where Paul and Barnabas had preached on their first journey, Paul, Silas, Timothy, Luke, and perhaps others made their way to Troas, after unsuccessfully attempting to travel in other directions. In Troas Paul received his vision of a man of Macedonia calling for help. Responding to this call the party crossed into Europe and preached at Philippi, a major city of Macedonia. Through a series of circumstances the missionaries were led to leave Philippi and press on about 100 miles westward along the Egnatian Way to the next major population center, Thessalonica Act17:1-9.

As was his custom, Paul visited the Jewish synagogue in Thessalonica where he knew he would find people who held much in common with him: respect for the Old Testament, theological concepts, and cultural practices. Since Paul was a well-trained teacher, he was allowed to speak in the synagogue. His message, as Luke summarized it, consisted of two points: the Old Testament taught a suffering, dying, resurrected Messiah; and these predictions were fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth. Though Luke did not say so, Paul also may have taught that Jesus Christ would return to fulfill the remaining messianic prophecies Act17:7. In the Thessalonian Epistles Paul sought to answer questions that had arisen from his teaching. As a result of Paul’s preaching several people were converted including (a) some Jews, (b) several Gentile Greeks who had come to the synagogue because they had placed faith in or were interested in more information about the Jews’ God, and (c) the wives of some prominent Thessalonian citizens Act17:4.

The length of Paul’s stay on this occasion is a matter of minor disagreement among students of the Thessalonian Epistles. Some believe that the reference to Paul’s presence in the synagogue on three Sabbath Days Act17:2 means that he was in Thessalonica for only about 21 days (e.g., James E. Frame, A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, p. 7). Others feel that Paul was probably there for a longer period of time, perhaps as long as six months (e.g., Richard B. Rackham, The Acts of the Apostles, London: Metheun & Co., 1901, p. 296). Those who hold the latter opinion base it on the implications of other passages that may hint at Paul’s experiences in Thessalonica during this visit. For example, Paul apparently worked at his craft of tentmaking while in Thessalonica 1Th2:9; 2Th3:8. These references may imply a prolonged stay, but they do not require it. Some interpreters contend that Php4:16 suggests that the Philippians sent two gifts to Paul while he was in Thessalonica and that would be unlikely, they say, if he were there just three weeks. Other commentators insist that this verse only says that the Philippians sent two gifts; they claim it does not explicitly say that Paul was in Thessalonica when he received both of them.
The length of Paul’s stay is significant because of the doctrinal background of his readers which the Thessalonian Epistles reveal. Of course knowledge of what went on in the Thessalonian church after Paul left as well as while he was there is sketchy at best. But it seems that Paul fed these new believers a rich diet of doctrinal instruction in a fairly brief period of time. Also, Paul wrote as though he left Thessalonica before he really wanted to. Perhaps a stay of a few months in Thessalonica is fairly accurate.

Quite possibly Paul continued his teaching and evangelizing out of Jason’s house after the Jews opposed him Act17:5-10. His adversaries regarded Paul’s message as a threat to Judaism, as Jews have done since the gospel was first preached in Jerusalem. The non-Christian Jews in Thessalonica resorted to a strategy to get rid of Paul that was similar to that employed by Jesus’ enemies and Stephen’s accusers. They hired troublemakers and put false accusations in their mouths. Storming Jason’s house, but failing to find the missionaries, the mob dragged Jason before the politarchs. The Jews charged Jason with harboring revolutionaries who were promoting treason by teaching the people to disobey Roman law and to follow a king other than Caesar. Though this was a serious charge, especially in a city whose free status could be withdrawn by Rome if it were true, the city rulers saw through the motives of these jealous Jewish zealots. The rulers only required Jason to guarantee that Paul and his friends would not disturb the city’s peace any longer. This made it necessary for the missionaries to leave Thessalonica. The Christians who remained continued to feel the heat of Jewish persecution, however, not only from the Jews themselves, but also from the Gentiles whom the unbelieving Jews influenced 1Th2:14; 2Th1:4.

The Occasion of the Letter

When Paul and Silas left Thessalonica, they proceeded about 40 miles west along the Egnatian Way to Berea. There they ministered for a short time until the hostile Thessalonian Jews, hearing of Paul’s preaching in Berea, tracked down the missionaries and incited the Berean Jews to expel Paul from their city. Paul made his way south to Athens while Silas and Timothy remained in Berea. Paul sent a message to these two companions as soon as he reached Athens, asking them to join him, which they did Act17:10-15; 1Th2:1-5. The plight of the new Thessalonian converts so concerned Paul that he sent Timothy back to Thessalonica to check on the church’s welfare. Timothy rejoined Paul at the next stop, Corinth, with encouraging news Act18:1, Act18:5; 1Th3:6-7. This led Paul to write 1 Thessalonians. Some students of this epistle believe that Paul wrote not only to commend the Thessalonian believers for their steadfastness in persecution, but also to answer questions they sent to him through Timothy. Though there is no external evidence for the existence of a document containing these questions, it is obvious from the text that Paul wrote answers to some of their questions 1Th4:9; 1Th5:1. These questions may have been relayed orally by Timothy. Another reason for Paul’s writing was to correct misinformation and false accusations that circulated after Paul left Thessalonica. Paul also wrote to exhort them to go forward in their faith.

The Purpose of the Letter

Specifically, the Holy Spirit led Paul to pen this inspired epistle in order to meet several needs. He encouraged his children in the faith to persevere despite their persecution. He refuted false charges made by the local enemies of the gospel: that the missionaries had preached in order to fatten their wallets and gain other personal benefits; that Paul had left Thessalonica hurriedly and had not returned because he was a coward and a hypocrite. Paul also wrote to correct some errors that had cropped up in the church: an inclination to moral laxity and laziness, and a tendency not to respect the church’s spiritual leaders. Paul gave instruction too on the subject of what would happen to Christians who would die before the Lord’s return.

The Place and Date of Writing

References in Act17:1-34 and Act18:1-28 as well as in 1 Thessalonians make it clear that Paul wrote this epistle from Corinth. Evidently the letter was written shortly after Paul arrived in Corinth Act17:1-10; Act18:1). The references to Gallio’s proconsulate in Corinth Act18:12 on ancient secular inscriptions make it possible to date Paul’s stay in Corinth fairly accurately — in the early 50s (Jack Finegan, Light from the Ancient Past, Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1969, p. 282). Conservative scholars date 1 Thessalonians between a.d. 50 and 54. This would make the epistle one of Paul’s earliest inspired writings, probably his second (after Galatians).

The Authenticity of the Epistle

The Pauline authorship for 1 Thessalonians is not questioned by scholars who take the statements of the book at face value. During the last century objections to Paul’s authorship were raised by critics, but these have now been answered satisfactorily (see, e.g., A. Robert and A. Feuillet, eds., Introduction to the New Testament, New York: Desclée Co., 1965, p. 390).
