Today, October 20, is the traditional Feast of St John Cantius
(Święto św. Jana Kantego)

"To most Catholics in this country, St. John from Kenty - otherwise known as John Kanty or John Cantius - is an obscure saint, but even in Europe, probably few people know of Pope John Paul II’s deep and lifelong devotion to this professor saint.

Only thirteen miles from the Holy Father’s own birthplace, John was born in the small southern Polish town of Kenty on June 24, 1390. At the age of 23, he registered for studies at the Jagiellonian University, located in the not too distant city of Krakow - then, the capital of the Polish Kingdom. Founded 1364 by royal decree, it was the same university at which astronomer, Nicolas Copernicus, would study almost 80 years later."...

"For the many years that Fr. John resided at the Jagiellonian University, he balanced his intellectual pursuits in science and theology with active works of mercy. He denied himself even the smallest comfort — if not absolutely needed — in order to have more to give to the poor. He ate the minimum required to subsist and never ate any meat; he slept on the floor rather than on a cot. He not only gave alms to the poor, but was also especially kind to students living in poverty.
His dedication to spiritual works of mercy and his humility show through these words that he took as his motto: “Beware disturbing: it’s not sweetly pleasing/ Beware speaking ill: for taking back words is burdensome.” Some hagiographers say that he worked several miracles during his lifetime."...

"Saint John from Kenty, patron of the Canons Regular of St John Cantius, lived in times not unlike our own. Although not as intense as the cultural crisis of the late twentieth century, his time was nonetheless a period of tension and sweeping change. As for us, it was a time of crisis as well as reform in the realms of culture, politics and religion."...

"Many philosophers wished to separate the Church from the realm of learning, some mystics wished to separate piety from a search for the truth, Hussite heretics wished to detach the Church from all temporal matters, and academics defended the rights of pagans and schismatics, under the banner of freedom of conscience. The similarity to our time is uncanny."...

“What kind of work can be more noble than to cultivate the minds of young people, guarding it carefully, so that the knowledge and love of God and His holy precepts go hand-in-hand with learning? To form young Christians and citizens, isn't this the most beautiful and noble minded way to make use of life, of all one's talents and energy?”– St. John Cantius (Św. Jan Kanty)

'Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko was a Heroic Priest! His Amazing Story of Martyrdom in Poland during Communism - Saint of October 19'

"...His body was finally found on October 30. On November 2 after an autopsy was performed, a ceremonial farewell was conducted for Fr. Jerzy in Bialystok, and his remains were transferred to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Warsaw. An all night prayer vigil was organized for the murdered priest. His body was buried on the grounds of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Warsaw. Hundreds of thousands of faithful people from all over Poland participated in the funeral.
At the funeral Mass, 6 bishops and more than a 1,000 priests concelebrated. (This is incredibly brave & amazing during this time of martial law & occupation).

Since then, the burial place of Fr. Jerzy has been a site of special prayer. Since interment, the grave of the Martyr has been visited by more than 18 million people from all over the world.

On June 14, 1987, a Servant of God, John Paul II prayed there. A spontaneous yet live worship of the Martyr which began immediately after his death continues to this day. The St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish continuously receives affirmations that graces are being obtained through the intercession of Fr. Jerzy.
He was beatified on June 6, 2010 in Warsaw’s Piłsudski Square. His mother, Marianna Popiełuszko, who had reached 100 years of age a few days earlier, was present at the event."

Today, Oct 19, is the feast of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko...

On October 19, 1984, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a Polish Catholic priest and outspoken supporter of the Solidarity movement, was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered by agents of Poland's communist secret police.

Known for his courageous sermons promoting freedom, truth, and human dignity, Father Jerzy became a symbol of peaceful resistance against communist oppression.

His murder sparked nationwide outrage and strengthened the Polish people's determination to fight for freedom.

Beatified in 2010, he remains a powerful symbol of faith, courage, and the struggle for democracy in Poland.

Did you know?
A miracle is currently being investigated for his canonization.
He offered "Masses for the Homeland" during martial law.

We remember.
Pamiętamy.

October 16 is a special day in the history of the Church, as well as for the Polish Nation and Polonia.

Today is the Feast of St Hedwig of Silesia and the 48th anniversary of the election of Pope John Paul II.

It was on Oct 16, the liturgical memorial of St. Hedwig of Silesia in 1978 that Cardinal Karol Wojtyła was elected Pope. John Paul II often reflected on this remarkable coincidence, seeing in it a sign of Divine Providence.
Saint Hedwig had long been close to his heart. Even while serving as the Metropolitan of Kraków, he made pilgrimages to her shrine in Trzebnica (near Wrocław, the capitol of the Silesian region).

Saint Hedwig held a profoundly personal significance for Pope John Paul II during his papacy. He frequently invoked her memory during his trips to Lower Silesia because he viewed her as a historical bridge of reconciliation between the Polish and German peoples.

During his historic first return to Poland after his election, Pope John Paul II delivered this specific message on June 5, 1979, during a Holy Mass celebrated at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa. The liturgy was dedicated specifically to pilgrims traveling from Lower Silesia and Silesia.

The Pope spoke to hundreds of thousands of faithful about how his election was deeply intertwined with the liturgical calendar of Poland and the providence of God. Having been elected on October 16, 1978, he focused heavily on the spiritual weight of that exact date.

Because he could not visit her burial site in person due to the itinerary restrictions imposed by the Communist authorities, he announced a special votive offering from Jasna Góra to be sent directly to the Shrine of Saint Hedwig in Trzebnica (near Wrocław).

He reflected on his role as the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first-ever Polish pope. He stated that when his name was called in the Conclave on the feast of St. Hedwig, his thoughts immediately traveled back to the Polish homeland and the intercession of its saints.

John Paul II explicitly highlighted Saint Hedwig's historical legacy, calling her the "patroness of reconciliation between neighboring countries". This was a subtle but profound message aimed at rebuilding peace, spiritual unity, and human rights across a divided Europe during the Cold War.

Today, Oct 5, is the Feast of St Faustina.
The First Saint of the New Millennium.

Did you know?...
- On May 18, 2020, Pope Francis decreed that St. Faustina Kowalska’s feast day be added to the Roman Calendar as an optional memorial to be celebrated by all on October 5.
- The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship issued the decree May 18, the 100th anniversary of the birth of St. John Paul II, who canonized St. Faustina on April 13, 2000, making her the first saint of the new millennium.
- John Paul II’s life was intimately connected to the Divine Mercy devotion. He died April 2, 2005, the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday. He was beatified on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2011 and canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday in 2014.
- Faustina seemed to describe visions of St. John Paul’s pontificate twice in her diary written in the 1930s, and John Paul had important spiritual connections with Faustina from the 1940s until the end of his life.
- He began the cause for her sainthood as a bishop. Most strikingly, he called her canonization the happiest day of his life and died on the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday, the important day Jesus called for in her diary.
- Her diary twice references the first Polish pope, seeing things few had imagined (in 1937): globally available television, massive jumbo screens, and the satellite technology allowing crowds in two parts of the world (Poland and Rome) to see each other.

More violence comes to Polish religious communities and churches...

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, a fatal stabbing attack occurred at a historic 17th-century Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, Poland, leaving one priest dead and four other people injured.

The attack took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. on the grounds of the historic 17th-century Benedictine Sisters' Abbey, specifically at a complex housing the Center for Christian Formation and Culture shortly before morning Mass. According to prosecutors, the suspect entered Poland from Germany and was heading toward the Ukrainian border when he stopped at the abbey. He allegedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and carried out a stabbing spree, targeting people inside the monastery. One witness reported that a priest was struck in the neck artery, while another noted a priest was stabbed inside a confessional.

The suspect attacked four men and one woman. Father Stanisław Zbojniewicz died at the hospital from severe injuries sustained in the attack. Two other priests remain in serious but stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery. Two laypeople (a man and a woman) were also wounded and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The violent incident, highly unusual for religious sites in Poland, drew swift condemnation from international leaders.

As the Beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen takes place today, we remember the words of our beloved St John Paul II during this heartwarming embrace.

These profound words were spoken by Pope John Paul II to the iconic American television evangelist, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, during a historic embrace at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on October 2, 1979.

At the time, the 84-year-old Archbishop Sheen was in failing health and standing near the back of the cathedral during the Pope's first official apostolic visit to the United States. Spotting him, Pope John Paul II called Sheen forward, lifted him up as he attempted to kneel, and whispered this beautiful validation of his life's work into his ear.

Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us!
Saint John Paull II, pray for us!
