I was introduced to the prayer shawl ministry during the recovery of the community after the April tornadoes. After much prayer and a hunger to be a part of such a ministry, I mentioned it to ladies at our church. I discovered that I was not the only one wanting this to happen. Anothe
r lady in our church had been doing this on her own, so together, we spoke to our pastor and he told us to "give it wings" and we did. On August 30, 2011, we and five other ladies of our community came together for our first gathering. Our desire is to be a community of people creating prayer shawls, knitting and crocheting as contemplative prayer, alone and in groups, and gifting the shawls as expressions of God's love to enfold the recipients. The shawl will be filled with prayer, blessings and peace given as a gift of comfort. The ministry is open to everyone and there are numerous ways to participate. Anyone who knows of a need can submit a request. Each shawl is prayed over before given to a recipient...prayer is also offered up as each shawl is made. Each shawl is presented in a gift bag with a personalized card. It is our prayer that as the recipient wraps the shawl around them, they will feel the Lord wrapping his arms around them, comforting, loving, healing and giving peace to them.
