What is Maundy Thursday?
The night before Jesus died, he gathered with his closest friends for a meal. He got up from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist, and washed their feet — one by one. Even the one he knew would betray him. Maundy comes from the Latin word for "commandment." He called it his new one: love each other the way I have loved you.
—
Lord who came to serve not to be served,
You loved the disciples to the end. Even Judas, who you knew would betray you. Still you washed his feet — as an act of inclusion, as an extension of mercy, as an act of love with no exceptions.
Help us to pray for those who seek our harm.
Help us to extend peace to those who cause us trouble.
Help us to be gracious with those with whom we do not get along.
Help us to be people who carry a towel in this world.
Inhale: It is difficult to love.
Exhale: I choose to carry a towel in this world.
