Happy Sunday y’all!

Today is the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, and as we follow the Three-Year Lectionary, our readings were:

Psalm 138
Isaiah 51:1-6
Romans 11:33-12:8
Matthew 16:13-20

We had a great sermon by Reverend Ben Jore titled “Christ Builds His Church” where he talked about St. Peter’s confession of Christ as the Messiah and Son of the living God! Messiah, which means Christ (which means “Anointed One”), encapsulates Christ’s three roles of Prophet, Priest, and King. Those roles involve being anointed with oil, and Christ, the greatest of all these roles, is THE Anointed One. St. Peter’s confession is the rock on which the Church is built, amen amen!

Happy Sunday y’all!

Today is the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, and as we follow the 3 year lectionary our readings were:

Psalm 67
Isaiah 56:1, 6-8
Romans 11:1-2a, 13-15, 28-32
Matthew 15:21-28

Pastor M. J. Meyer helped sub in as pastor and gave us a great sermon titled, “The Circle Expands,” where he preached on the faith of the Canaanite woman. Christ praised her faith, an astounding gift from God seeing as she was from a pagan people and area. This exemplified how His ministry, while to the Jews at first, came to the Gentiles as He is a God for us all!

Today is August 15, which is the Feast Day of St. Mary! The Blessed Virgin, the Mother of God, she is worthy of these titles. This is why we, as Lutherans, agree with our confessions that the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon are true in calling her the Theotokos, or "God Bearer" in Greek.

We honor her today for her shining example of obedience to the Divine Will. She conceived, bore, and raised the Word made flesh. We should look to her also as an example of humility, as Dr. Luther states in his writing "The Magnificat" (1520-1), “She does not say men shall speak all manner of good of her, praise her virtues, exalt her virginity or her humility, or sing of what she has done. But for this one thing alone, that God regarded her, will men call her blessed. [She] lays claim to nothing and counts only Him as great.” We still honor her to this day with the liturgy of Vespers, where we sing the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55).

We celebrate with the church catholic all over the world and across time in celebrating her! God bless!

Today, August 10th, is the feast day of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr! We honor his service to the Church and look to his dedication and that the Holy Spirit cultivated in him!

Made a deacon under Pope Sixtus II in 257, he was later made an archdeacon tasked with overseeing the charity work of the church in Rome.

In 258, Emperor Valerian issued a decree stating that all clergy should be put to death, which was swiftly put into effect capturing and putting Pope Sixtus II to death. After this the prefect of Rome orders Lawrence to turn over the riches of the church, which Lawrence responded saying that he needed 3 days to gather them. During this time, he worked tirelessly to distribute the wealth to the poor and downtrodden of Rome to prevent the Emperor from seizing them. On the third day, leading a delegation, he went over to the prefect as he had promised. Instead of precious goods, he presented the city’s poor and impoverished residents and said, "Here are the treasures of the church. You see, the church is truly rich, far richer than your emperor!"

For this, the prefect prepared a gridiron and hot coals for the archdeacon.

We honor his resolve on the face of great persecution, and we pray that the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, may give us this resolve in our lives. God bless y’all!

Chaplain Don Muchow gave his sermon “In the Storm” on how even in the storms of life when Christ seems to have abandoned us, He provides and is there with us. With Him, we need not fear anything!

The Central Texas Food Bank is coming back to St. John! After a wonderful response last summer, St. John is thrilled to welcome them back again this summer. Mark your calendars:

- Who: Parents/Guardians with children in the Uhland, TX area
- What: the Central Texas Food Bank will distribute one box of food per child. Each box has enough food for one child to eat breakfast and lunch for two weeks.
- When: June 2, 16, 30, July 14, 28 (every other Tuesday) from 12:00-5:00pm or as long as supplies last. Come early!
- Where: in the St. John Lutheran Church parking lot (9865 Camino Real, Uhland TX 78640)
- How: REQUIRED - each child must be present and have some form of identification (birth certificate, school ID, report card, etc.)
