Faith and salvation go hand in hand, yet sometimes Christians treat them as one and the same. Salvation is by a substitute. For the Israelites, the lamb the Lord provided them offered salvation as the Angel of the Lord passed over the land of Goshen, according to the blood of the lamb. For Christians, it is the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that guarantee our salvation. Faith is the means by which the Israelites obeyed God and spread blood on the doorposts. Faith is also the means by which we grab hold of the promises found in the gospel, yet it is not our faith that saves.

The final plague can be one of the greatest difficulties for people as they begin to read the Bible and discover who God is. However, so much of what many struggle with regarding the death of the firstborn is built on false premises about the nature of God and man. Exodus 11 shows that God keeps His word in both judgment and salvation and that life is in His hands.

The narrative has shifted. No longer will God, through Moses and Aaron, make demands of Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. Now, God will meet Pharaoh and the people of Egypt in signs of judgment against them and their false gods.

God has answered Moses and given him ample reason to trust him: first, because God will do what he says he'll do, and second, because God is a covenant-keeping, abiding God. With that vote of confidence in who the Lord is, Moses is to go and continue, and the Lord will confront Pharaoh and demand Israel's release. Yeah Moses continues to struggle with his own ability but God re-centers on Himself.

God continues His answer to Moses' question, "Why have you done evil to this people? You have not delivered them." A pointed question, but an honest one. God does not condemn Moses for asking, but instead He answers Moses in two parts. Part 1) God will accomplish what He wills. Part 2) God will act according to His character, which is good, true, faithful, sovereign, and kind.
