The old adage that says “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” might have been written with good intentions, but it’s not really true. The truth is, our words hold tremendous power. Words can hurt, or they can heal. Words can make a person feel loved, or they can make a person feel worthless. Words can build up, or they can break down.

James 3:5-6 says, “…though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things. Consider how a small fire sets ablaze a large forest. And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Those are strong words, written to guard us from burning it all down with our words. While many people feel the freedom to “tell it like it is”, children of God should be very careful to season our words with grace. Sure, we are to speak truth at times, but even hard truth can be seasoned with grace and spoken in love.

It would be a tragedy if we used our words in such a way that we damaged the cause of Christ in our community. It would be horrible if we caused someone unnecessary pain and pushed them away from knowing Jesus. It would be devastating if we damaged relationships that God intended to bring us joy and support. But such is the power of the tongue. And we are all guilty.

Let us make a commitment today to be slow to speak, and when we do speak, may we speak in such a way that we build others up instead of breaking them down, that we put out fires instead of spreading them, and that we point others toward Christ instead of pushing them away.

“In the spring when kings march out to war, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel.”
2 Samuel 11:1

That verse seems very innocent when you read it out of context, but there is a glaring problem when you understand what is really going on. 2 Samuel chapter 11 is the passage that tells us of David’s grave sin with Bathsheba. Not only did he commit adultery, but he had Bathsheba’s husband murdered to cover up his sin. While God forgave David because he had a repentant heart (2 Samuel 12:1-14, Psalm 1), the consequences of David’s actions were catastrophic for he and his family.

Here is the truth that 2 Samuel verse 1 reveals: David never should have been on that rooftop looking at Bathsheba. He was supposed to be at war like the other kings. Instead, he abdicated his responsibility. He was not where he was supposed to be and he was not doing what he was supposed to be doing, and it cost him dearly.

There is a lesson in that tragedy that we all need to learn. One bad decision led to many other bad decisions. If David had made the first right decision and had gone to war with his officers and soldiers, he would not have been in the position to make the sequence of bad decisions that followed.

I have a friend who overcame a years long addiction and has been clean and sober for several years. I asked him a couple of years ago to give me one piece of advice that I could pass along to others who are struggling. He quickly said, “Make the next right choice.”

Our walk with the Lord, and protecting ourselves from the catastrophic consequences of sin, comes down to one decision at a time. We are all one bad decision away from a sequence of events that might be destructive. But we are also one good decision away from a sequence of events that will glorify God, advance His kingdom, and bring us closer to Him.

Choose wisely.
