On Thursday, Tapestry of Faith UCC joined thousands of students at the University of Alabama’s annual Get On Board Day!

We met first-year and returning students, gave away hundreds of rainbow rubber unicorns 🦄, and shared what makes Tapestry a little different.

We believe Tuscaloosa needs a church like this—a community where everyone, everyone, everyone is welcome. Our Church is a tapestry of many faith backgrounds, life experiences, cultures, identities, questions, and spiritual journeys. There is a place for you in the Tapestry.

Kim Wood, welcome Acting Conference Minister Rev. Davy Fosburgh, and heard a powerful sermon proclaimed by Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson, President/CEO of the UCC.

Tapestry of Faith United Church of Christ denounces the University of Alabama's recent policy changes that remove explicit harassment and nondiscrimination protections based on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

We believe every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and safety. We stand with LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff and affirm that your worth is not determined by any policy. You are beloved by God, and you are not alone.

The University of Alabama has quietly removed s*xual orientation, gender identity and gender expression from its Harassment and Equal Opportunities and Non-Discrimination policies.

Archives from UA’s website for the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs show monthly changes, college paper The Crimson White reported on 22 July.

During the 2025 fall semester, the website detailed that the institution’s protections against education and employment discrimination included “sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.” Mentions of gender expression and identity were removed by September 2025 and s*xual orientation references were removed by January of this year.

Alex House, a spokesperson for UA, said that the changes “reflect the current language of relevant federal laws.”
