We are part of the World’s Largest Men’s Catholic Fraternity with more than 1.8 million members. The Tuscaloosa Knights and Ladies are very active in many local charitable endeavors with the goal to improve the quality of life for the entire Community through the application of our Faith Values. When the Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882, its founder, Fr. Michael McGivney could not have foreseen the global threats to our Christian way of life, but his formula for providing for the common good has demonstrated that the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, on which our Order was founded, are universal and timeless. Our Knights Hall, located on the campus of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, provides facilities that allow for a wide range of events to provide for both the business needs and social interaction so vital to a charitable, fraternal organization. Our Council values family, as much as it does fund raisers. It is interested in young men as much as the longtime family member and values the input of each member regardless of their life station. We know that by opening our Council doors to all Catholic men, 18 years or older, and sharing with them the excitement of reaching deep into the community to provide youth programs, family programs, programs to support individuals with intellectual disabilities, programs to support a cleaner environment, programs supporting the clergy and seminarians, involvement with the wheelchair foundation, and support of charities like Catholic Family Services, we are helping to improve life for many in our community while having fun and fostering fraternity in the process. We are proud of the fact that we promote a campaign to Keep Christ in Christmas and favor activities supporting our the culture of life. We take pride in our support of EWTN programming as the Knights of Columbus pay for all of the satellite uplinks for Christmas and Easter Masses broadcast from the Vatican each year. And we are especially proud of the fact that Order will and has paid for the downlinks of those broadcasts in countries who could not afford to do so for their citizens. We are particularly proud to support our veterans, whether at home or abroad, for their efforts to preserve the the liberties we enjoy today. Our Fourth Degree Knights are dedicated to the principle of Patriotism and actively support the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center and its hundreds of resident patients. We are proud to participate in a program to supply, resources, and spiritual support to the clergy currently stationed abroad. The Bishop of the Diocese of Birmingham, Robert Baker, has reminded our Knights that, outside the clergy itself, the Knights of Columbus is the only Catholic sanctioned organization that takes and oath, very much like the clergy’s vows, to uphold and promote the principles of our Catholic faith. As testament to the the profound personal impact of our work, it is common to hear a Knight profess openly that he has become a better Catholic through his membership in the Knights of Columbus.
